EDUCATIONAL.

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board of Education was held last week. Present —Messrs J; R. Blair (in the chair), W. C. Buchanan, W- W. McCardle, J. Young, F. Bradey, F. H. Fraser, W. E. Fitzherbert, Dr Newman arid Rev J. Paterson. The resignation of Mr J. H. Brdnn, headmaster of the Carterton School, on the ground of ill-health, was accepted. Permission was granted to Mr C. Hulke, headmaster of the Newtown School, to withdraw his resignation; ’ The resignation of Miss Kate Brann (Clareville) was accepted. Leave of absence was granted to Miss Ellen Wallace, Mount Cook Girls’ School, and Miss Ethel Townsend, Clyde quay School, from the present time until the re'opemng of the schools after the Christmas holidays. The chairman and Messrs Bradey and Fitzherbert were appointed a committee to deal with the sale of a school site and the erection of a teacher’s residence at Otaki. It was decided to accede to tile request of Miss IT. E. Thompson (Paikakariki) and Miss Mary Hawkins (Malcuri) to be transferred to city schools as soon as vacancies occurred. An application for an enquiry into the result of work at Mangamahoe School was referred to the local committee. The question of appointing a third assistant at the Mount Cook Boys’ School was referred W a committee consisting of the chairman, Rev J. Paterson and Mr J. Young. The application of the Mauriceville East School Committee for alterations to a shelter shed was referred to the inspector. An application for the erection of a teacher’s residence by the same committee was refused, as there were no funds available. An application for repairs to the roof of the Johnsonville School was referred to the carpenter to report on. A deputation consisting of Messrs S. Prowse, F. G. Pothoriok and J. J. Flyger, representing the Te Aro School Committee, waited on the Board and asked that Miss Mitchell, of Pahautanui, should not be placed over the heads of the present assistants in the school. The deputation suggested that one of the assistants should be

promoted and Miss Mitchell get her place. The deputation also asked that the school should Be repaired and repainted. The Board promised that the matters would be taken into consideration.

A deputation consisting of Messrs H. C. Fetersen and N. Jansen waited on the Board in connection with some troiible at the Mauriceville School. It was decided to appoint a committee,, consisting of the ; chairman and Messrs McCardell and Young, in.conjunction with the local committee, to hold an enquiry into the matter on Monday, 10th December. The appointment of pupil teachers, for which there were 61 applications, was deferred until the next meeting. The appointment of a headmaster to Carterton School was deferred until the local committee had considered the recom'mendation of the Board.

The lowest tenders were accepted for work at the Terrace School and painting at the Mangataxiloka School. It was decided tq hold the next meeting of the Board on next Wednesday week.
