SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Committee of the Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday week. Present—Rev W. J. Habens (in the chair), Rev J. K. Elliott, Messrs 0. H. Black (treasurer), J. S. Jameson (secretary), Mesdamos Lingard, Christie and Hislop. The inspector reported that on the Bth inst. two cases, each containing two pigs, were landed from the s.s. Penguin at 8 a.m., and re-shipped at 5 p.m., being all that time without food or water. Regarding the case of cruelty to three horses at Evans' Bay, the offenders in which have already been before the Court, the inspector stated that the animals were sent to Lane's stables, where anyone could have access to them, the consequence being that when the collars were brought to the Court the next morning they had been cleaned, especially the one on which a quantity of ' hair and matter was the day before. He had heard of some cruelty in shipping oxen on to the s.s. Tasmania, and the manager of tho Huddart - Parker Company had stated that for the future ft was his intention to ship them by the box and discard the slings altogether. Inspector Pender had given instructions to the wharf constable to examine the boat arriving from the South every Sunday, and to report if he saw anything wrong. The inspector also reported on a case of pigeons being sent to Wellington by tho s.s Waihi under circumstances where they were too tightly packed, and also several cases of alleged cruelty to animals which are at present under consideration. The cases reported on during the last fortnight were as follow:—One of cruelly handling poultry, three of working horses with sores, one of working a lame horse, one of overcrowding in transit, one of flogging a horse, one of furiously driving, one of leaving pigs without food, one of overloading, one of using bearing reins. The secretary was- requested to confer with the secretary of tho Harbour Board as to the best means of preventing animals being allowed to remain for a long timo on the wharf without food. It was decided to make further enquiries into a case of alleged cruelty to pigs. Mr C. W. Rowe, of Lyttelton, wrote, regretting that the Society should have had any cause to complain of tho poultry sent by him to Wellington. Ho did his best to prevent overcrowding, or any cruelty, but as to placing water in the crates, his experience was that it did not answer.

The treasurer acknowledged the following subscriptions:—Mr C. T. Benzoni, 2s 6d; collected by Mr Hislop's children, 2s; Mr J. P. Firth, £1 Is.
