LAING, THE PUGILIST, CONVICTED OF LARCENY.
+ (BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Wanganui, October 12. - Harry Laing, the pugilist, and William Noble were charged this morning with stealing £230 from the person of one Joseph Abbot. There was a further count charging them with receiving the said money, well knowing it to have been stolen, Mr Fitzherbert appeared for the Crown, Mr Coates for Noble, and Mr Hogg for Laing. The evldenoe was identical with that given in the lower Court. Abbot, Cathro, Rowe, Campbell, Milligan, and others gave evidence. There were no witnesses for the defence. Mr Fitzberbert summed up the case for the Crown very briefly, and after the address of the counsel for the 'defence His Honor summed up. The jury retired at 7.15 and returned at 9.5 with a verdict of “guilty.” Sentence waß deferred till Wednesday. Wanganui, October 12. In the trial of Laing and Noble to-day the only new point adduoed militates against the Crown, as it was shown that accused had expressed their intention of going to Upokongaro before they knew, so far as th# evidence proved, tbat Abbot was going there with the money.
