(BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Masterton, October 8. Arrangementshavo been made to forward 5000 trout from the Masterton hatcheries to Woodville, for distribution in tho streams there. Owing to the temporary discontinuation of the importation of Btoat3 and weasels, the North Wairarapv Rabbit Board will probably reduce the rate next year from a Id per head to a £d on sheep, and from 3d to Id per head on cattle. The Red Star Football Club’s annual ball was held last night. The bad weather interfered witli tho attendance, otherwise it was very successful. The trophies won during the season were presented by the Mayor at the ball, Masterton, October 9. The Wairarapa North County engineer reports that to secure an efficient supply of watcr| for Masterton it would be necessary to tap the Waingawa several miles from Masterton, the fall being much less than he supposed. Rabbit Inspeotor Mackav reparts that rabbits in this district are less numerous than for some years past. Masterton, October 10. Mrs Shaw, wite of Mr F. Shaw, of Te Ore Ore, died this morning in the railway train bstween Masterton aud Carter, ton. Mrs Shaw has been in indifferent health for some time, and was proceeding to Wellington in company with her husband and youngest daughter for tho benefit of her health. The late Mrs Shaw arrived in the Colony with her husband and family about thirteen years ago, subsequently removing to this district. The deceased lady leaves a large family of groan up sons and daughters to mourn theirloss. Inspector L-e paid an official visit to the Ekotahuna School yesterday. Six thousand young trout, forwarded from tho Masterton fish hatcheries to Pnhiatua, have been liberated iu the Mangataiuoko and Mangaono rivers. (press association. ) Mas’erion, October 9. Largo quantities of timber are being turned out of this district, a numbor of mills being in full work. Masterton, October 13. It is expooted the burns in the Forty Mile Bubli this year will be an improvement ou those of last year. The timber in many places is very dry and ready for burning. A meeting of ratepayers at Pnhiatua haß been called for Friday next to consider the question of a proposed appeal in the case Reese v County Council. It is expected i.evoral tnombera of the Council will be called upon to resign. The weather has this season been exceedingly favourable for the crops in this district. In some of the fields arouud Masterton there ia a growth of nearly a foot, and the prospects for a good harvest were never better. it is stated that the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society intending erecting new yards at Clareville. Tho funeral of tho late Mrs Francis Shaw, who expired suddenly in the train on Saturday last, took place this aftetnoon, the Bttendanoo being very largo.
