London, October 7The lightermen have declined to join in the riverside strike. Tho lightermen, yielding to pressure, have given way and joined the strike. London, October 8. The employers have accepted BeD. Tillett’s suggestion for a conference, but adhere to their original terms. Tillett replies that it would bo batter to accept these than extend the strike. London, October 9. The strike at Carron Wharf has virtually collapsed, unless the leaders of the labour party venture on a general strike. Tho employers have refused to hold an interview with the men, and are preparing for a bight fight.
London, October 10. Since tho emplottap] have refused negotiations with the stnSers the latter have determined to extend the present block in London to tho provinces. The men engaged on Chamberlain’s and Hay’s wharves havo received notice of an intended reduction in wages to 5d per hour. Mr Tom Mann otates that during the past two years 15,000 members of tho Dockers’ Union have resigned, and that the present strength is 40,000. London, Oo'.obor 12. Mr John Burns considers the present time inopportune for the strike, and characterises the aotion of those now going out as mad and suicidal. Ho urges the Introduction of the ballot box i.i connection with strikes. Eight thousand uailworkers in England are going out on Btrike as a protest .against the 10 per cent reduction in their wages. Ottawa, Oetobtr 7. A portion of the lumbermen who went out on striko have returned to work, the mas ters having conceded shorter hours. Sydney, October 9 The Trsdas Council has passed a motion disapproving of “ General ” Booth’3 coloirsation scheme. ! The coilhcavars havo joined.the strikers. Melbourne, October 10. Th l ? Intercolonial Labour Congress will meet in January, to endeavour to arrive at a basis of federation. STRIKE OF FRENCH GLASS WORKERS London, October 11. Tom Mann is a candidate for the. Secretaryship of the Engineers’ Union. London, October 12. Twenty-five Trade Unions have issued a rnani esto urging the Unionists to boycott the Carron wharf goods, hut its success is doubtful. Paris, October 11. Tbo whole of tho glassworkers in France have struck. THE DUNEDIN BOOTMAKERS. Dunedin, October 12. A special meeting of tho Bootmakers’ Union was held to-night to consider the new statement put forward by the Employers Association. Those present disapproved of the conditions of labour, and it was resolved to ask the master bootmakers to meet in conference with the men to arrange satisfactorily to both parties, while also enabling the masters to compete with the Auckland masters.
