(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) New Plymouth, April 1. The Exhibition was largely patronised today. The fireworks last night were attended by about 5000 people. The Opera this evening was largely attended. To-morrow’s programme promises to be successful. Westport, April 1. The little steamer Picton. which went ashore to the north of the Little Wanganui River, is now safely moored inside. . .... Wanganui, April I. Mr Harkness, M.H.R., now on a visit to New Plymouth, stated daring n speech he made there that he had purchased a farm in Taranaki, and intended residing upon it in the future. . , Timaru, April 1. Mr G. Chatter Miles, local manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, left to-day to take charge of the Wellington Branch. The leading business and pro. fersional men met to bid him good bye, the Mayor presiding. Mr Miles has been here 15 years, and much regret is expressed that his promotion entails his departure, Dunedin, April 1. Mr Vincent Pykeis suffering from nervous paralysis of the right arm, which is quite useless to him. ... . , John Webster, charged with attempted suicide at Abbotsford, was discharged. Mr Wilkinson delivered the inaugural lecture at the opening of the University tonight. The students were more than usually decorous. __ . , Nelson, April 1. At a meeting of the Nelson Education Board to-day the Auckland Herald’s article was considered, and a report adopted to the effect that the charges in the article, one and all, are so ludicrously inapplicable to what is going on in this district, that it is hard to make any Berions rejoinders. The charges were then referred to In detail, and the report set forth that the conditions alleged did not obtain in Nelson. In reference to the circular re the Utago Trades and Labour Council's resolution, the Board passed the following resolution : “ That this Board cannot reco?ci-e that the Otago Trades ard Labour Council is a proper body to advise Education Boards as to the selection of schoolbooks, a matter to which the Nelson Board has hitherto directs# much of its time and attention.”
