THE WAIRARAPA.
Masterton, March 12. At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Wairarapa North County Council, held this afternoon, Messrs E. Meredith, A. Renall, and John Hesaey, as a deputation, requested the services of the County Engineer for a preliminary survey for a high-pressure water supply from the Waingawa River. The application was granted. Should the report prove favourable, a pubiio meeting will be held to consider the advisability of raising a loan. Masterton, March 18. The seventh annual meeting of the Wairarapa Rifle Association ooncluded this evening. Splendid weather was experienced, but the wind was choppy. The belt was won outright by Sergeant Matthews, the winner last year, also the President’s medal. The same man made the highest aggregate. E. Rutherford, Carterton, oivi. lian, made 162. The Lansdown Match, 200 yards, 10 shots, went to Blane (Masterton Rifieß), with a score of 43. Wellington Match, 200 and 300 yards, seven shots—E. Rutherford (Caiterton), 45, 1. Wairarapa Match, 200 and 500 yards, seven shots—H. Hoffiena (Masterton Rifles), 57> 1. President’s Match, 600 yards, (ten shots— Matthews, 27, 1. The total number of competitors was thirty. A. A. White (Masterton Rifles) was seoond for the belt. Tbe shooting average throughout was rather low for the new open range. The sports held at Eketahuna yesterday in aid of the Masterton hospital were well attended. T. Thompson and R. Gray won the principal events. The Catholic sports
and concert held here yesterday wore very successful. Miss M. Cimiuo, of Wellington, who was to have taken part in the oonoert, through her dress catohing in a form was thrown heavily to the ground and rendered unconscious, in addition to being out about the face rather severely.
