GREYTOWN.

The annual meeting of the Greyfcown Volunteer Fire Brigade, which took place at the Brigade Hall last Thursday night, showed up to the present a satisfactory state of affairs. The building; -whioh is valued at £250, was erected by contribution of cash (£9B 8s 6d), timber, vo’untary labour, and donations. There is still a liability of £23 3s 2d, which will be cleared off cut of the sports fund. The general fund liabilities are £35 18s, The cost of the engine was £231 6s 4d, off which £B6 7a has been paid ; present liability on engine, £144 19a 4d, which is being paid in half-yearly instalments of £ls 9a. After the adoption of the report and balancesheet, the election of officers for the year, votes of thanks to retiring officers, &0., it was resolved to hold monthly meetings the seoond Monday in eaoh month. St. Patriok’s Day was a close holiday, the Greytown Amalgamated Friendly Societies (Oddfellows* and Foresters) Sports came off in the Recreation Reserve. The weather was fine, and as the events were varied, and £IOO to be competed for, a 'Targe company were present from the town and surrounding districts. The band played seleotions at intervals. The refreshment, booths seemed to be doing a good trade. A fancy stall seemed'also to be doing well. /.* In connection with these events held in the Recreation Ground, a drawback prevents a larger attendance, namely, entrance fee is Is /for adults ; 6d for children. There are no seats on the ground except the “ grand stand,” a covered in arrangement, with elevated seats (admission 6d) ; consequently if a man, wife, and family go, the gate-money, &p., half empties his pocket, simply to gaze until they are siok and tired at events, at long intervals,.within the ropes. There are no games going on to amuse the children, no accommodation for rest and pleasaat gossip, and so it happens men stand nntil their backs ache, or go and get an occasional drink, and when all is over, go home and growl at their folly. At night at the Palace Theatre the Greytown Minstrel Troupe gave a concert and performance to a good house. This was followed with a dance, wbioh was kept going until the “ wee sma’ hours.”

On the some evening the Friendly Sooieties’ annual dance took place at tbe Foresters’ Hall, -was kept merrily going nntil a’ter midnight. l Tne Greytown Football Club have commenced praotioe on the reserve ground.
