Mr Gladstone

The Illustrazione Italiana prints the following letter, written by Mr Gladstone to the Countess Martinengo Cesaresco, author of * Patriotti Italiani,’ which was first published in English by Mr T. Fisher Unwin, under the title of ‘ Italian Characters in the Epoch of Unification —‘ My public and personal engagements keep me sadly in literary arrear, but yesterday I began your work, and I read with profound interest the memoir of Ricasoli and that of the Poerios. Both are most interesting, and the workmanship is like that of a practised biographer. The Ricasoli is singularly vivid. I knew him at Florence in 1866, and I cannot forget how, on my entering his room for the fii'st time, he grasped my hand and cried “Siamo amici.” I would that his services were still available for Italy.’
