NATIVE INDIGNATION.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Gisborne, September 27. A meeting of the Natives of the district around Whatatuhu was held on Tuesday for the purpose of entering a vigorous protest against the aspersions cast by counsel for the defence in the recent Streeter murder case, in suggesting that Maoris might have committed the deed. It is considered that there is not the slightest ground for raising any suspicions against the Natives, and there was no authority for the statement that Streeter shot Maori dogs, and that ill-feeling was thus engendered. In consequence of the great crowd of Natives present, and the many speakers, the proceedings lasted over eight hours. A letter signed by 37 chiefs has been forwarded to the Minister of Justice, protesting against the statements made.
