THE BARQUE PERU.
A QUEER STORY. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Gisborne, January 18. The Nautical Assessor has inquired into the stranding of the barque Peru on a reef off Sellott Island whilst on a voyage from Townsville to Gisborne. The evidence given showed that the Peru left Townsvilla on the 4th Noyepiber. The look-out man said he told the mate the vessel was going toward the rocks nearly twenty minutes before she struck. The Court has reserved its decision till Tuesday. ' Gisborne, January 21. The Court of Inquiry find the captain of the barque Peru to blame for not exercising sufficient care close to a lee shore, and for leaving the deck when the vessel would have been clear of the rock in an hour. The chief mate (since drowned) is also found guilty of negligence. The certificates were handed back, but the captain was ordered to pay the cost of the inquiry.
