DRAUGHTS TOURNAMENT.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, January 21. Mr Jas. Patterson, of Melbourne, the present holder of the Draughts Championship, being unable to attend the draughts tournament here, has placed the, title at the disposal of the tournament. The following gentlemen have entered :—Messrs B. Gray (Melbourue), W. Warnock (New South Wales', T. Reid (South Australia), Boreham, McPherson, and Rankin (Oamaru), Mclllrick, Morris, and Raeaide (Invercargill), Shaw, Brodie, Foreman, Hutton, Rich, and Given (Dunedin), Ayeson (Edendale, Southland), W. B. Hogg (Mount Somers, Canterbury), J. Bruce (New Plymouth), and W. H. Smith (Wellington). Four New South Wales and Queensland players are expected to-morrow. Dunedin, January 22. The draughts tournament for the championship was commenced to-night in Watson’s Hotel before a large attendance. Mr b alder (chairman) said the funds had not come quite up to expectation, so that the prizes would suffer, but the first prize would not be less than £25, and the others in proportion. Sixteen players put in an appearance, Queensland being the only colony unrepresented. The tournament is conducted on the two-life system. The first draw resulted as follows :—Warnock (New South Wales) won two games and drew one, same with Smith (Wellington). Brodie (Dunedin) won three and drew one with Risk, of Dunedin. Boreham (Oamaru) won two and drew two with Reid (South Australia). Hood (Canterbury) won three from Gray (Melbourne). Shaw (Dunedin) won one and drew three against Foreman (Dnnedin). Raeside (Invercargill) won one and drew three with McPherson (Oamaru). Moll* wrick (Invercargill), and Aysson (Edendale-, won one game each and drew two, and they will have to play till odo wius another game. Hutton (Dunedin) and Bruce (New Plymouth) have each won a gamp, another being drawn. The fourth game is in Hutton's favour, as he has the advantage of two men.
