N.Z. MAIL PUBLISHED WEEKLY. FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 1890.

REVENUE RETURNS.

The Customs returns for December, 1889, are not yet quite complete, but the re-

ceipts are known tp be slightly over L 120,800. This is somewhat disappointing, being less than the Novemberrevenue (L 122,081), although considerably above the receipts for December, 1888 (L 108,164). The shortcoming for nine months, as compared with the Budget estimate, is over LGO,OOO. It is still believed that January, February, and March will do a great deal toward pulling up this deficiency. The beer duty for December was L 6371. This is a large advance alike on the preceding month (L 5055) and on December, 1888 (L 5545), and the estimate for the year will pro bably be more than realised by the 31st March. The railway traffic returns for December are understood to have been very good, notwithstanding the unfavourable weather experienced on the holidays in some places.
