THE DUST CART.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALA ND MAIL. Sir, — According to the printed notices issued the dust cart should come up Mu 1 grave-street on Monday, from 9.30 to 11 30, but to the utter disgust of the residents the cart did not visit that street at all to-day. Anyone going along the s*reefc any time to-day could see the boxes all along just inside the fences. I got up early and had mine out ready at 7 o’clock, but there it remained until 1.30, when I happened to Bee a private dustman passing with lii3 cart, and I asked him if he would remove it, which he did on being paid for it, and he told me he was carting for his old customers, as they could not depend on the new contractor to take tho stuff away. Now, Sir, I consider the system adopted a wretched one. I would suggest that the citizens should be allowed to put the boxes on the edge of the kerbstone, say at 7 a.m., and that the cart should come before 9 a m., and that all boxes should be taken in by 9 a.m. ; that is quite late enough for work of that description to be carried on. At present the housewife has to be on the watch all day for fear the cart should pass withou t noticing the box, whereas, If it was placed on the street there would be no need of watching, as the man would be sure to see it. But according to the regulations we are liable to be proceeded against if the boxes are placed on the street before the cart comes, so that a person would require ,to be standing waiting on tho cart if he wishes to get served and be safe.— I am, «fcc,, -T.B. Mulgrave street, May 6.
