FIRES.

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, April 26. A fire broke out this morning in the premises of W. Hooker, grocer, Kyber Passroad. The building and stock, &c., are totally destroyed. The adjoining residence, that of Mr La Roche, was gutted ; whilst the store of A. Johnston, fruiterer and grocer, and an empty shop, were also damaged. The insurances are—Hooker’s stock, £3OO in the London and Lancashire office. The shop was owned by Mrs Byrnes, who had £2OO on it in the South British. La Roche's house and furniture, £250 in the South British ; Johnston’s stock and furniture, £7O in the South British. Invercargill, April 26, The damage by the fire at Fleming and Gilkinson’s flourmills is estimated at £4OOO. The insurance, amounting to £IOOO, is equally divided in the New Zealand and Royal offices. This was the first occasion on which the sjew water service was tried on a fire of any magnitude, and it did fairly well, portions of the building and the engine being saved.
