PALMERSTON NORTH.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) March 13. Harvesting operations in this district may now be said to be over, and, from what I can gather, the crops all round are better than the average. The weather thi’oughout lias been all that the farmer could desire, and those who suffered from the heavy rain squalls which came on early this morning have, in most cases, only themselves to blame. To most people the ram will be very welcome indeed, for, although perhaps no part of the Colony suffered less from drought than our favoured spot, both country folk and townsfolk were beginning to find the water supply running a little short. The latter are not likely to be again inconvenienced in that way, as I am informed so rapidly are Messrs Coates and Metcalfe proceeding with the waterworks that within six months we shall see the Tiritea scheme completed. The Palmerston North Harmonic Society had a capital practice last evening, and are now in a forward state of preparation for the approaching operetta “ Mazeppa,” which is to be produced on the 9th proximo. A commencement will at once be made with the construction of the connecting link between Palmerston and the Gorge, Mr Honeybone, the contractor for the work, having arrived here to-day, accompanied by a considerable number of workmen and a string of drays carrying plant and material.
