WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL

The report of the Public Works Committee presented at the meeting of the City Council last evening was a 3 follows : —The Committee beg to recommend—(l) That a 2-inch water service be supplied to the Convent at Hill-street on the usual conditions. (2) That a reply to the following effect be sent to Messrs Miles and Co., agents for the Gulcher Electric Light Company, who have applied for information as to the terms on which the Council would be willing to supply tho company with water power for domestic lighting, viz-;—“That the Counoil

will not be in a position to give any further wator motive power until it has determined its own requirements, which can only be definitely fixed after the electric installation is complete; but tho Council has under consideration the question of bringing in a further water supply, which will (if carried) enable it to supply all that is required.” 3. That a similar reply be sent to the Harbor Board, who have ap. plied for water power for lighting the wharves and quays belonging to the Board. 4. That no allowance be made to the Harbor Board on account of the water supply for the month of January, the Corporation's meters having been found to be correct when tested. 5. That consent be given to the establishment of the following rights-of-way s-(l) Orr, to the Northern Land Loan and Building Company, off Taranaki-street, on condition that only one house is erected ; (2) F. de J. Clere and Cecil Roadley, off Martin-square. 6. That censent bo not given to the establishment of a right-of-way off Knigge’a Avenue, applied for by Messrs Matthews and Tanner. 7. That the first quarter’s . subsidy to the District Board be paid under protest, as last year, pending the hearing of the appeal made by ,the Council against the assessment. 8. That the Corporation insurances for 1888-9 be given to the Colonial Insurance Company as usual. 9. That tho, footpaths at the following properties be lowered to their proper level, in order to allow of the owners putting up their fences :—Mrs Payne, Aurora-terrace ; R. H. Furness, Adelaide-road; J. _W. Noman, corner of South-road and Wariporistreet, the latter to do the work himself and the Council ts allow him £5 for it. 10. That th 6 fo lowing drainage works be carried out in the order named, the work to bo done as soon as practicable without increasing the staff of workmen in the employ of the Corporation : Ellice-street, College-terrace, Wellingtonterrace, Lombard-street, Hankey-street, Cambridge-terrace, Cuba-street Extension, Tory-street, near Francis-place, Boltonstreet. 11. That applications for the following works be allowed to stand over for the present Paving and channeling at Piriestreet (north side), kerbing, channelling, &c., at Green-street, kerbing, channelling, &c., at Tasman-Btreet, asphalting footpath in Mar-tin-square, formation of Daniel-streec between Constable-street and Mein-street, :omp etion of formation of Mein-street, forma, tion of Rolleston-street, channelling at Scarboro’-terrace. 12. That a reply be sent to the petitioners for continuation of Cou-stable-street to the South-road that the Council is unable to undertake the work. 13. That accounts amounting to £2230 43 Id be passed for payment.
