(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Westport, September 1. Some rich specimens have been obtained from the Denniston Quartz Mining Company’s ground. A rich leader runs through the ground. Captain Haselden has presented a silver cup to be fired for by the local Volunteers. A measles epidemic is raging in the town, very few families having escaped. Mr James Powell has erected a handsome and commodious villa residence. Saturday, the 17th instant, is fixed as the nomination day for the Buller. Passenger rates were levied for the first time to-day on the Cape Foulwind line, which has hitherto been free. A Lyell miner named Mair met with a dynamite accident, necessitating the fingers and thumb of his left hand being amputated. There are nine candidates for three actual Borough Council vacancies. The general election has evidently, started up interest in Municipal politics. Westport, September 5. The coal export last week was 2272 tons, A young girl named Watton accidentally out off two of her toes of the left foot with an axe. A man named Humphrey was arrested on Saturday on a warrant from Wanganui for passing a forged cheque purporting to be signed by Messrs Fitzherbert and Marshall, solicitors, of Wanganui. He also passed a cheque for £lO similarly signed, on a trades, man here. Accused was remanded till Wednesday. He appears to be suffering from delirium tremens. \
