New Zealand Mail Office, Thursday Evening. Trade has been fairly good during the past week, but the usual falling off toward the end of .the month is noticeable. Messrs Johnston and Co’s salvage stock went off at good prices, which will affect sales somewhat for a few weeks. Currants are very scarce, and are worth 5Jd. There are some lots to arrive by th. 9 Trevelyan and Port Sonachan. Salmon also is scarce, and now the market is bare it will have to respond to the rise that has taken place in San Francisco. Fish. —The Cutting Company’s Cocktail salmon is worth 9s, and at. fact there is none in the market. Ling is al|o wanted. Sugar is at the same prices as last week; No. 1, L2B; No. 2, L 2 6; No. 3, Tvffi, American granulated is worth L 27, and is in light supply.. The latest reports from London do not show any advance. London coarse salt. —Stocks are at present easy, and likely to rise. Of fine salt there is a fair stock and large lots to arrive. Candles —There are very heavy stocks of all brands in the market; stearine are quoted from 7d upward ; Siberian wax are quoted at the same figure ; we hear of quantities both of Southern and local made tallow candles getting into the retail trade. In cement the market is quiet, and quotations for the next stock are at 14s to 14s 6d for first-class English brands. Tobacco —Jars are quoted at Is 3|d to Is 4d ; Black Swan twist, Triumph twist, Triumph nailrod, Over-the-Water nailrod, Black Hawk, and Star of Virginia are quoted at Is 2d to Is 2id; in aromatic tobacco William’s Imperial Ruby twist is quoted at from 2s 3d to 2a 4d. The weather at present is seasonable for spirits, whisky, brandy, rum, gin, and also for stout, and in consequence sales have been somewhat brisk, but the contrary has been noticeable with ale of various brands. Ale and stout are quoted the same as last week as follows: Griffin's is quoted at 11s for quarts and 7s for pints ; Porter’s Bulldog, 11s 6d for quarts and 7s 6d for pints. Bass’ bulk ale has met with small inquiry at L 9 to L 9 10s, duty paid. In spirits, Hennessy’s brandy, 1-star, is at 33s 6d to 36's; 3-star, 48s to 50s. Denis Mounie and Co.’s stocks are light, and good sales are reported at 31s 6d to 32s ; bulk, 10s to 10s 6d. Bisquit du Bouche, 22s 6d case, 7 s 3d to 7s 6d bulk. Walker's Kilmarnock has met with most inquiry at 20s ; Usher’s at 22s 6d, and Teacher’s at the same price. Royal Navy rum is quoted at 9s 6d ; fine Jamaica, at 22s 6d. Kerosene The market is fairly firm, and the 130 test is quoted at 9f J, 350 plain at lljd to Is, and the patent Is to Is o£d. The N. M. Slade brought 5000 cases of oil to Wellington. STOCK SALKS” Chaistchuroh, April 27th. _ The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report (per Mr E, G. Stavelev) as follows: — At the Addington yards to-day there were about 9000 sheep, and light entries of cattle, and a fair supply of pigs. Fat cattle —improved bullocks, L 6 10s to L 7 7s 6d ; cows, L 4 5s to L 6 103; prime beef, 18s per 1001 b; store cattle, dull. Fat-sheep, heavy crossbreds, 10s to 11s 6d ; exceptional weights, 13s 3d; medium crossbreds, 5s to 7s 9ci ; merino wethers, 3s 6d to 6s lOd, Mutton, Id to l|d per lb. Fair demand for young crossbreds at 4s to 5s 4d; old sheep, 2i to 3s for

boiling down. Pigs unchanged ; heavy sorts 3Gs to 395, equal to 3d per lb. DcrirEDiir, April 20th._ The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report (per Mr D. Stropach) as follows :—2Ol cattle were yarded. Best bullocks, L. 6 10s to L 8 10s ; for extra prime, L 8 15s to 1,10; light and medium quality, L 4 5s to L 6 5s ; beef, 15s to 17s 6d per 1001 b. Sheep ordinary, 4s 3d to 6s 9d. Merino wethers, 3s6dto3s9d.' Mutton, to per lb. 245 lambs brought 5s to 7s 6d. 230 pigs ; suckers, 9s 6d ; porkers, 19s 6d to 28s 6d ; baconsrs, 30s to 425.
