SHIPPING SUMMARY. Since last summary the English trade to this port has been considerably below the average, the number of arrivals being very few. The intercolonial and coastal trade has been regular as usual. We have had two mail steamers, both direct from Hobart to Wellington the Tongariro, which arrived on the 26th ultimo, and the Arawa, on the 11th instant. Ihere has been only one other arrival from Home, the barque Scottish Bard, from Glasgow. During the past week we have had three barques from Australia, theW. C. Wentworth, with a cargo of hardwood, fche Kentish Liass, and the Lois, chartered by the Brunner Coal Co., with a cargo of coals. Two others are outside the Heads waiting for a favorable wind to get in-the G. M. Tucker, from Newcastle, and the True Blue, from Adelaide. Outward we have had the ships Pleione, on the 25th ultimo, and the Hurunui within a week of her for England, and on the 7tli April the R.M.S. Kaikoura. On the 19th of March the barque Scottish Bard, whichleft Glasgow on the 12th December, arrived at Dunedm, and after discharging there she came on to Wellington, arriving here on the 13th instant. Fhe present is the first visit of the Scottish Bard to Wellington. She is an iron vessel of 861 tons register, built at Glasgow in 1876. Her dimensions are-Length, 189 ft 2m; breadth of beam, 33ft; depth of hold, 19ft lin. She was 99 days out on the passage, and had fane weather for the greater part of the time. one brought nine passengers to the Colony, and all arrived in good health. The New Zealand Shipping Co’s R.M.S. arrived from London, via Plymouth, Madeira, Capetown, and Hobart on the 26th ult. The lonfrariro brought about 1400 tons of cargo, of which 600 was for Wellington, 200 for Port Chalmers, 100 for Auckland, and 500 for Lyttelton. During the passage (which was a very pleasant one) the usual amusements were arranged, viz, concerts, dances, theatricals, etc., much to the enjoyment of the passengers. The Tongariro left Plymouth at mid-day on the 12th February, and experienced fresh to moderate winds and fine weather to Madeira, where she arrived on the morning of the 16th February. She left, after coaling, at noon the same day, and had moderate to light NE Trades to the Equator, which she crossed in 9deg W. From thince to 2deg S she had squally weather, and experienced moderate to fresh SE Trades and head sea to 30deg S, when the wind shifted to the north with thick foggy weather, which delayed the steamer two hours. During a lift in the fog she made Green Point, and had to steam into port during the break at 1.43 pm on March 3. She left the Cape at 7 pm the same day ; experienced for the first two days light winds and foggy weather, thence N W and westerly winds and fine weather to 84deo-, when she met with fresh easterly winds, freshening to a hard gale on the 15th instant n long 96deg. Passed the Eddystone Rock at 8 am, and arrived at Hobart at 1 pm on the 22ud instant. She sailed again at 6.30 pm the same day for Wellington, and experienced moderate to light NW winds and fine weather, arriving as above. The Tongariro s total time from Plymouth is 42 days 3 hours 10 minutes, and her actual steaming time 40 days 18 hours 37 minutes. On Thursday, the 7th instant, the R.M.S. Kaikoura sailed for London, She hauled of! into the stream on Wednesday night, and the ps Colleen took off passengers and luggage on Thursday. Her berthing accommodation was fully taken up. and her holds and moat chambers were also full. On the 11th instant the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s ss Arawa arrived from London via the Cape and Hobart. She had a fine weather passage, and a thoroughly enjoyable one for the passengers, all kinds of amusements having been got up and thoroughly entered into. On the voyage out an extensive robbery on valuables look place in the second saloon, and an arrest was made at Hobart of a. suspected person. There was one death, that of a third-class passenger named Ebenezer Baker, who died of consumption. The Arawa, left London on the 24th February with 164 passengers, 55 first, 32 second, and 77 third. She embarked at Plymouth 200 immigrants. She arrived at Teneriffe on the 3rd March. Left again on the same night and. reached the Cape on the 18th March. She sailed again on the 19th, and arrived here as above, lhe Arawa left for Napier and Lyttelton on the 19ih inst. The latter port she leaves finally for England on the 30th inst. During the past month it has been decided by the New Zealand Shipping Company, and also we believe by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, to carry coastal passengers by their steamships. Hitherto passengers have only been allowed by special permission. In future passengers will be carried coastwise by the large steamers at the ordinary rates. A beginning with the new system was made by the R.M.S. Tongariro, which conveyed a number of passengers from Wellington to Lyttelton. Captain Allman, of the Penguin, was specially complimented by Captain Stuart of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co s ss Arawa, on the value of his invention, the nautical and danger indicator. Captain Stuart, on inspecting the invention, expressed his intention of having one fitted up on board the Arawa as soon as she reaches England. Captain Allman’s invention becomes very popular as fit gets better known, and there is no doubt that when its value has become practically tested it will come into very general use. The only casualty worth . recording during the month is an explosion which occurred on board the ss Omapera when she was going from Greymouth to Oamaru, on the 18th instant. The Omapere was about 4Q miles from Oamaru, and had on board a cargo, of coal. One of the hatches, had been lifted to get out the coal gear, and a man with a lantern approached the hatch. The candle in the lantern set fire to the coal gas, causing the explosion. Several of the hatches wore hiown

off, and the first mate had his face badlyburnt. A passenger, who was standing by, was also burnt on the hands. Beyond the damage to the hatches, however, the vesselescaped altogether.
