EXPLOSION ON BOARD THE STEAMER OMAPERE.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Oamaru, April 19. An explosion of coal gas took place on board the ss Omapere when she was about 40 miles from Oamaru on Monday morning. The Omapere was coming from Greymonth with a cargo of coal, and one of the hatches had been lifted for the purpose of getting out the coal gear. A man approached with a lantern and the explosion took place. Several of the hatches were blown off, and the first officer, who was standing over the hold, had his face very badly burnt and his whiskers singed off. A passenger also had his hands badlv burnt. No damage was done to the steamer.
