FOREIGN WARSHIPS IN THE PACIFIC.
(UNITED press association.) Auckland, March 24. News from Tahiti states that a Chilian man-of-war is expected there shortly, which will proceed to Auckland and Australia. It has transpired that the cause of the sudden appearance of the French warship Duquesne was the loss of the Admiral’s despatches from the French Government fay the burning of the mail steamer Raiatea. The Admiral, on learning of the destruction of the despatches, got up steam for Auckland to place himself in communication with the French Government in the present critical state of affairs. The A Battery returned the salute of the Duquesne to-day. Auckland, March 30.
The splendid band of the French warship. Duquesne, by permission of Admiral Dasaint Hiiaire, gave an open air concert in Albert Park to-day to 2000 spectators. The Band performed, among other items, the “ Kawau March,” dedicated to Sir George Grey, of which Chef de Masique de Hayes has made a band score.
