She sailed on the 18th December, and on the 21st a strong gale set in, lasting three days. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Te Anau lett Sydney at 5.30 pm, on the 27th.ult., and arrived in Auckland at Ipm on the Ist inst., whence she departed at 12 30 pra on the 3rd, and called at Gisborne on the 4th and Napier on the sth, leaving the latter port at 3 pm same day, arriving at Wellington on Sunday last. She experienced fine weather throughout the passage until Cape Palliser was reached, and from thence to arrival a gale from the northwest was encountered. She sailed for Melbourne via South on Monday. The ss Waitaki left Auckland at 10 pm on the 2nd, called at Gisbourne and Napier, and arrived here at 8.30 pm on Sunday. She experienced strong NW gales and heavy seas throughout. The ss St Kilda left Greymouth at 5.30 am on the 3rd inst, and arrived here at Ipm on Sunday. She experienced strong N W gales, and high cross seas which broke over her, carrying away the deck houses, and killing a horse which was on board, also compelling her to run some mile 3 off her course. She experienced also strong northerly gales, which did not abate till she got in the Straits, when she had fresh NW breeze and fine weather to arrival.

The ss Neptune left Blenheim at midnight on the 4th, was obliged to take shelter at Port Underwood through stress of weather at 5.30 am on the sth ; left Port Underwood at 1 pm on the sth, and arrived at 6.45 pm. She reports having sighted a barque taking shelter at Port Underwood, but was not near enough to make her out. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Waihi left Blenheim on Saturday, but was obliged to put inte Port Underwood on account of heavy gales ; left Port Underwood at 1 pm on Saturday, and arrived here at 8 pm. The Waihi left for Blenheim at 8 am on Sunday, but had to return from the Heads, owing to the strong head wind blowing outside. She succeeded in getting away jiext evening. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Manapouri left Melbourne on the 26th ultimo, Hobart on the 28th, and arrived at the Bluff on the 2nd instant. She left the Bluff on the same day, called at Dunedin on the 3rd, Lyttelton on the sth, and left the latter port at 3.30 am on the 6th, arriving here at 6 pm on Sunday. She experienced thick, hazy weather from Melbourne to Milford Sound, fine clear weather thence to Port Chalmers, strong southerly gale, with high sea, to Lyttelton, and light variable winds during remainder of passage. The ss Macgregor left Onehunga at 4 pm on the 2nd instant, New Plymouth at 1 pm on the 3rd, Wanganui at 6 pm on Saturday, and arrived here at 7.30 am on Sunday, The U.S.S. Co’s ss Wakatipu left Sydney on the Ist February at 5 pm, was abreast of Stephen Island at 10.40 am on the 6th, and arrived at Wellington at 6.10 pm. She experienced strong NE winds and moderate sea for the first two days out, the wind then veering to NW, blowing a heavy gale for two days ; remainder of passage moderate westerly winds and hazy weather. The ss Wainui left Dunedin on the Ist, Oamaru on the 2nd, Timaru on the 3rd, and Lyttelton on the 4th instant, at 3 pm. She experienced fine weather to Lyttelton ; left Lyttelton with a strong north-east wind, which by midnight increased to a hea\ y gale. It then blew from the north-west with hurricane force, accompanied by a head sea, which caused the vessel to labor very much. At 3.50 am a sea broke aboard, smashing the after wheel, wheel-box, and gratings, also temporarily disarranging the steering-gear. At 5 am, having repaired the steering-gear, the vessel was headed for the lee of Kaikoura Peninsula, where she anchored at 7.15; at 11 am got under way again, the gale having moderated. Passed Cape Campbell at 4.30 pm, and arrived at Wellington Wharf at 9.30 pm. on Saturday. The U.S.S. Co’sss Omapere left Greymouth at 6.30 pin on the 4th inst, and Nelson at 6 am Sunday, arriving here at 5.30 in the evening. She experienced strong NE wind and head sea from Greymouth to Nelson, and fine weather thence to arrival. The N. M. Slade has left New York for Wellington and Nelson. The ss Kiwi arrived from Napier and Castle Point at 7 am on Wednesday. She returned Bame evening. . . The U.S.S. Co’s ss Maitai, from Westport, arrived at 2.15 pm on Wednesday. She returned same evening. . The ss Go-Ahead, from Napier and Castle Point, arrived on Wednesday morning. She Billed b r Wanganui same night. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Grafton left Dunedin on the 6th instant, called at Timaru, Akaroa, and Lyttelton, which latter port she. left at 4.45 pm oa Tuesday, arriving here at mid-day Wednesday. She sailed for Nelson and West Coast same evening. The U.S.S. Co’s ss Koranui. from Nelson and Picton, arrived here at 11.30 am on Wednesday. She sailed for Greymouth the same n *The ss Jane Douglas, from Foxton, arrived here at 8.30 am on Wednesday. She took the schooner Clyde (bound for Dunedin) in tow out of Foxton. The U.S.S. Co’s Rotorua left Onehunga at 9.50 pm on the Bth, cleared Manukau Heads at 11.36 am, passed Cape Egmont at 1.15 am

on Wednesday morning, and arrived here at 10 o’clock same night. She experienced strong south-east winds with heavy head sea throughout the passage, and sailed for Nelson after discharging her mails into the ss Rimutaka. ARRIVAL OF THE SHAW, SAVILL AND ALBION COMPANY’S SHIP IN VERCARGILL. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s ship Invercargill, which left London on the 30th of October last year, arrived off the. Heads early last Friday morning, and was towed in by the Mana, taking up anchorage at 11’30 am. On the 7th of January, when the vessel had been 69 days out, Mr K. Macauley, the chief officer (who had been ailing all through the passage), was obliged to take to his bed, and on the 22nd he died of consumption, and was buried at sea. Mr Macauley was an extremely popular officer, and was deeply regretted by all on board. With the exception of the chief mate, all on board enjoyed good health during the passage. The Invercargill’s voyage was a fair weather one. She came alongside the Queen’s wharf on Monday evening, and commenced discharging cargo next day. PASSENGERS BY THE SS TAINUI FOR NEW ZEALAND.

Ruapehu, from London, via Plymouth, Madeira, Capetown, Port Chalmers, and Lyttelton, left the latter port at 12.40 p.m. on the 4th instant, and arrived here at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday last. A full report of her passage from London to Port Chalmers has already been published in our columns. She experienced strong head winds and heavy sea during the run up from Lyttelton. ARRIVAL OF THE BARQUE THEODOR. The German barque (a full account of whose protracted voyage from New York to Lyttelton has already appeared in our columns) arrived here early on Tuesday morning. She left Lyttelton on the 28th ult., and has been detained on the passage through stress of weather. The Theodor is the barque which, it will be remembered, was knocked about by very heavy gales, and had to put into St. Thomas for repairs. The Theodor was towed alongside the Queen’s Wharf by the Mana on Tuesday evening. Her Wellington agents are Messrs Johnston and Co.

The Coptic has a large cargo of produce, including 35,56 S carcases of mutton, which is the largest meat cargo yet taken from New Zealaud in one vessel. FATAL ACCIDENT AT SEA. (united press association). Auckland, February 9, . The barquentine William Phillips, Captain Potter, arrived from New York, via Dunedin, to-day. During the passage from the latter port, a seaman named Fred. Barley was drowned. He was on the jibboom stowing the jib when three days out, and fell into the sea. The high sea and wind prevented the launching of a boat, and nothing was-seen of the unfortunate man after he fell. AMERICAN SHIPPING. New York. Cleared the N. M. Slade, for Wellington and Nelson Cargo for Wellington; 5000 cases of kerosene. Loading for Auckland and Lyttelton, the C. A. James. She brings 700 tons of milling machinery for Auckland. She sails on January 26. The Elinor Vernon sails on the same date for Dunedin. The C. and A. Dixon sails on February 15.

THE CHINESE STEAM NAVIGATION COMPANY. The rapidly increasing passenger traffic between Australia and the colonies and China and Japan has caused the Chinese Steam Navigation Company of Melbourne to run a monthly service between Australia and China. A magnificent fleet of steamers combining the advantages of a high rate of speed coupled with first-class berthing accommodation (which advantages have been looked upon in the past as peculiar to mail boats only) has been put on the trade. The steamship Changsha is the first of five vessels ordered by the Company to run in this service. She took up her running about a month ago, arriving in Melbourne from Hong Kong with a cargo of tea and miscellaneous Chinese produce. .A short description of the Changsha here will not be out of place. She was built by Messrs Scott and Co., of Cartsdyke, Greenock, and her dimensions are as follow Length of keel and fore-rake, 314 f t; breadth of beam, 38ft; depth of hold, 23ft 9in. Her gress tonnoge is 2268 tons and her net register 1459' tons. . She is fitted with powerful engines on the. triple expansion principle, with cylinders of 25in, 40in., and 60in respectively, \\i,h length of stroke 4Sin. Steam is supplied froua two double-ended boilers 16ft long, each being fitted with-six of Fox’s patent corrugated furnaces, the working pressure being 1501 b. The passenger accommodation is of the highest description, and she is capable of carrying 21 first, 30 second, and 40 third class passengers. The saloon is of polished hardwood, and is upholstered throughout in morocco, the floor being laid with mosaic ceramic tile 3. Adjoining the ladies’ bathroom is a boudoir, comfortably furnished with lounges and tables set apart for ladies. The second and third class accommodation is exceptionally

good, the whole of the poop being set apart for these passengers. The Changsha is commanded by Captain J. G. Williams, and carries a doctor, that important post being filled by Dr J. Laurie. Her other officers are : —Chisf officer, Mr It. Nelson ; second mite, Mr J. L. Gellatly ; third mate, Mr T. Sutherland ; chi® engineer, Mr Geo. Brown ; and second, third* and fourth engineers, Messrs .T. Bdby, J. Ferguson.and 'J 1 . Meehan. Messrs Johnston and Co. are the Wellington agents of tlieJChinese Steam Navigation Company, from whom intending passengers by the Company’s boats and others will get all information as to time of departure from Melbourne, &c.
