HAWERA NEWS.
(united press association.) Hawera, February 7. Within the past few days there have been found in the dams and lakes several specimens of the English brown trout which have died, it is supposed owing to the water having become too warm for them. Two found in a dam on Livingston’s farm averaged six pounds in weight, and another found in a lake on Caverhill’s farm weighed five pounds and a quarter. Other smaller ones have been found. The fry was liberated about two years ago, and at the same time fry were put in the Waingongoro, Kaupokonui, Tongahoe, and other streams, bub though indications of the experiment having proved a success have been seen, no fish have as yet been taken from the streamß. The drought has completely broken up, and the grass all along the coast is in splendid order, but the rain bas had a bad effect upon the grain and grass seed harvest. Steps are being taken in this district to merge the road boards into the county, and so do away with three local bodies.
