SEARCH FOR CASTAWAYS.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Invercargill, December 6. The tug Awarua returned from her trip to the Snares, in search of castaways, at 1.15 p.m. to-day. Captain Tyson reportshaving reached Ehe Snares on Saturday morning. He landed and made a thorough search, but found no indications of anyone having been recently on the island. He found a letter deposited there by Captain Fairchild, of the Government steamer Hinemoa, dated 3rd - October, 1886, and stating that on that day he had been compelled to take shelter under the Snares through stress of weather. The Awarua steamed slowly round, sounding the whistle at.intervals, but found no signs of anybody. In gomg down the Awarua steamed along the south coast of Stewart Island, but saw no signs of wreckage or anything leading to the supposition that any vessel had been lost.
