SUPPOSED ARSON IN CHRISTCHURCH.

(united press association.) Christchurch, October 28. An inquiry was held this afternoon into the origin of the fire in High-street on Tuesday last. A mattrass, smelling strongly of kerosene, had been found in the premises occupied by Mr Trotter, tobacconist, where the fire appears to have originated. Mr Trotter decided not to make any statement, and denied, by his solicitor, that he had any kerosene there. The jury returned a verdict, “That the premises burned ha*d been wilfully set on fire, by whom there was not sufficient evidence to show.”
