THE AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND.

MATCH AGAINST SOUTH OF ENGLAND.

London, September 1.

The cricket match, Australians v. South of England, was resumed and concluded at Gravesend to day, resulting in a draw. The Home team, with six wickets down for 90, continued their first innings, which closed for 170 runs.

The Englishmen followed on for their second innings, and succeeded in putting together 450 runs before they were all disposed of, F. Hearne (caught, 111), J. M. Read (caught, 109), and W. W. Read (caught, 87) being the most successful batsmen. The match was declared drawn, as time did not permit of the game being played out.

MATCH AT SCARBOROUGH. London, September 2.

The cricket match between the Australian eleven and a team selected by Lord Londsborough, was commenced at Scarborough to-day. The Englishmen went in first, and succeeded in compiling 266 runs for the loss of three wickets when stumps were drawn for the day. W. G. Grace contributing 92, and Scotton. 71. Scott, the Australian captain, retired hurt during the progress of the game.

AUSTRALIAN TEAM TO VISIT NEW ZEALAND.

Melbourne, September 3, Major Wardill, manager of the Australian team, telegraphs to the Melbourne Cricket Club that the team will return via San Francisco and New Zealand, where they will arrive in November, and will play a series of matches at the chief towns.

The annual meeting of the Ashley Cricket Glob was held at the Central Hotel on Monday night. Several Dew members were elected, and the election of officers resulted as follows : —President, Mr E. T. Gillon; Vice-President, Dr Newman ; Captain, Mr E. Rose ; ViceCaptain, R. H. Coltman ; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr H. Hyams; Committee, Messrs Coltman., Gamble, Marryatt, Paul, O'obea, Rose and Hyams ; Delegates to the Association, Messrs Hyams, Marryatt, and Rose. The trophies for the past season were presented to the various winners as follows :—First Eleven Batting, Mr E. Rose, 14*3 ; bowling, Mr J. Lawson, 4 03. Second Eleven—Batting, Mr Lewis ; bowling, Mr Gormley. Highest individual score for the season, Mr Coltman, 42, It was rseolved that the Club enter for both cups, and the meeting adjourned for a fortnight. Monday night. Mr W. R. Waters occupied the chair. There were about 45 members present The report and balance-sheet were read and’adopted. The batting trophy for the highest scores in the first eleven (cup) matches fell to Mr R. Whiteside ; and the bowling trophy to Mr C. Dryden, who also received a trophy for the highest score made by a member of the Club. Mr It. Roberts received a trophy for fielding, in the second eleven Mr Sanderson carried oh the batting trophv, and Mr H. Smith the bowling trophy. The balance-sheet showed the finances of the Club to be in a very satisfactory condition. About twenty-two new members were elected. The election of officers resulted as follows :—President, Mr W. R. Waters ; vice-presidents. Messrs Godber, W. G. Tustin, and F. W. Haybittle ; captain of the first eleven, Mr C. H. Mansill , secretary and treasurer, Mr P. B I)uff ; co _* mittee, Messrs J. Brown, C. Dryden, H. Roberts, and captain and secretary delegates to the Association, Messrs Mansill, Gooder, and secretary. The club is in a very sound condition, and its prospects for the ensuing year apDear to be very favorable. A hearty vote of thanks to the president, brought a very successful meeting to a close. . A meeting of the Wellington Cricket Association will be held on the 14th met. Amongst the business to be considered at this meeting i* a letter from Mr Tennenfc, agem for the English Cricketing Team which is about to visit Australia, asking the Association to offer terms for a visit of the team to Wellington.
