THE WEATHER.

Another great fall of the barometer took place yesterday week the final drop being of an extraordinary character. Last evening week the mercury stood at 28,77 inches, which in other latitudes would be quite a “hurricane The greatest depression was about the centre of the Colony, and this, combined with the direction of the wind (N.W. gale at Manukau, N.E. gale at Castle Point, and S.E. gale at Blenheim), showed that Wellington must have been near the vortex of a severe cyclonic storm, which was moving across from the west ward. A strong S.W. breeze with rain set inhere the same night. We have heard of very rough weather in other parts of the Colony. The barometer was very low on Friday and Saturday, On Friday there was a sharp earthquake, which may have had something to do with it. The weather was rainy till Sunday, when the sun gained ascendency once more, aud held it til Wednesday morning, the barometer meantime rising three-quarters of an inch to 30*40. On Wednesday the glass fell again, and had declined to 29*50 yesterday morning. A strong N.W. wind, with rain, blew.

It has been raining here steadily all day. All the rivers are very much swollen. The overflow is now coming into the streets in the centre of the town. If the rain continues there will be a heavy flood to-morrow.

Dunedin, September 2.

There were only four days in August on which rain did not fail in Dunedin. The total rainfall for the month was 19*552 inches. Rain set in again to-day.
