WELLINGTON COLLEGE GOVERNORS.

The legular meeting of the Board of Governors of the Wellington College was held at 11 o'clock a.m. yesterday, at the offices of Messrs. Brandon and Son. There were present—Mr. A. de B. Brandon (chairman), Dr. Hector, Rev. J. Paterson, and Messrs. W. H. Levin, H. Jackson, and H. Bunny.^ The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The ChatbmaN, before proceeding to business, stated that he had noticed that the newspapers had published the report regarding their financial position, which was brought up at their last meeting, notwithstanding a request made to the reporters present not to notice it.

Dr. HacTOB having suggested that it would be better in future to discuss the subject in committee, the matter dropped. A long discussion took place on the subject of rescinding the following resolution, which had been passed at a meeting held in February :—"That it is de-irable that the relations of the principal and the other masters b» defined, and that the principal have the appointment, direction, and dismissal of the master.", subject to the instructions and approval of the Board, and that all communications from the masters to the Board be made through the principal." The Rev. J. Paterson said he should like to see the resolution either rescinded or amended in such a way that the master should not have such power regarding bis assistants as was given by the resolution under consideiation. He argued that they, as the governors, were the proper persons to wield such power. Dr. Hector expressed himself in favor ©f allowing the matter to rest in its present state. The resolution did not give absolute power to the principal, but provided that hs actions should be subject to the inspection and approval of the Board. They had hitherto tried to have a clear supervision over the affairs of the College, which should really be vested in and exercised by the master, and the result had been a lamentable failure. The Chairman said he was inclined to think that the wording of the resolution, as it st >od at present, gave the master power to act as he liked, and the Board could only approve or disapprove after he had done what he wanted t» do.

After repeated attempts to explain the bearings of the subject it was decided to allow the matter to remain unaltered, only the chairman and the Rev. J. Paterson voting in favor of the alteration. After some discussion relative to the awarding of scholarships the matter wa* left

in the hands of the chairman and the Rev. J. Paterson to report upon at the next meeting. A letter from Mr. J. Marsh, referring to fencing the boundary between his land and a section owned by the Board, was referred to the solicitor for his opinion. , Mr. Robinson, jnn., wrote to the Board offering to lease 345 acres, situated in the Manawatu district, at the rate of 2s. 6d. per acre. It was resolved to hold the subject over until an opinion as to the value of the land had been obtained.

Several small accounts were passed, after which the Board adjourned.
