Geeytown, February 11. The following is the approximate return for the East Wairarapa election :—Andrew, 54 ; Barton, 30. Mr Barton polled none in the Whareama, and Andrew nine in the Lower "Valley. Great interest was taken in this election. Auckland, February 7. Flour, £l4 to £l6 ; sharps, £7 ; bran, Is 3d ; maize, 3s 9d ; oats, 3s to 3s 3d. Potatoes, £4 to £5. Butter, lOd ; cheese, 5d ; bacon, 9d; hams, Is. Tonks and Co. yesterday sold Honolulu sugars by auction as follows ; —Bright yellow crystals, £33 5s to £34 15s. White counters, £3l 10s. Fine grey crystals, £29 7s 6d. Yellow crystals, £27 ss. Light yellow counters, £2B 15s. The bidding was brisk. " There is heavy rain falling, and the weather is unsettled. February 8. At Mr Buckland's wool sale yesterday there was a large attendance of buyers, and bidding was brisk. Skin wool, Is 3d ; greasy, B|-d to Is 3d ; washed long wool, lOd to Is 7d ; half bred, 9d to Is 3d. Over 50 tons of phormium were sold at prices from £l6 to £26, according to quality. The weather is unsettled, and heavy rain falling. February 10. The storm has cleared off and the weather to-day is extremely hot. The storm did considerable damage along the coast, and houses and fences were blown down in several of the country districts. Mr Buckland catalogues 4000 sheep for his annual sheep fair on the 12th inst. Arrived—Warwick, from London, with 184 passengers—all well. Two births and two deaths occurred on the voyage. February 11. The Sea Gull has arrived from Fiji, and reports that gold has bsen found there. Mr March, the British Consul, has left the country. Dr Kidd has resigned the classical mastership of the College and Grammar School. February 12. A chemist named Watts has been fined for selling poison to a woman without a witness, and also for selling strychnine without entering it in the sale book. Buckland's annual sheep fair at Remuera is largely attended. February 13. The Kaipara railway works are so far completed that in a month hence they will be ready to lay the sleepers. George Bodgers, solicitor, is dead. The Auckland colonial representives held practice in rapidity, running, and skirmishing matches yesterday, and obtained excellent results. Cotton has been grown successfully on Captain Heale's farm near Hamilton, Waikato district. Buckland's sheep fair held yesterday at Bemuera was attended by over a thousand persons ; 5000 sheep were penned. High prices ruled for good animals. Governor, from Maori tribes are being sent in. ' Preparations are making for large meetings of natives at Ngaruawahia to bid farewell to the Governor. A monument to the memory of Tamati Waka is cqming by the Phoebe, and will be erected at Russell. The Governor will be at the uncovering. There will be an immense meeting of the northern natives. Stormy meetings are being held respecting the education tax. Grahamstown, February 11. The '' Advertiser's" correspondent says a fracas occurred at the new goldfield, Whangamata, Upper Thames, yesterday. The prospector, Goldwater, with James Mackay, Native Agent, and two policemen, went to peg out a prospecting claim on their discovered reef, when the miners, numbering 150, interfered and declared that unless the prospector, Goldwater, showed gold, they would not allow him to peg out. Some violence was used, and at last Mr Mackay took the diggers to a reef which he said had been pointed out to him by one of the prospecting party. Goldwater declared that was not the place he had discovered. Bumor says that gold has been opened on Hikutaia Side Range. Mr Warden Fraser is to proceed to the ground at once to quell any disturbance. The old Golden Crown, at the Thames, has turned out a valuable specimen leader. Napier, February 8. There has been a north-east glale blowing for the last two days. This morning the Mary Ann Hudson parted her cables and attempted to enter the inner harbor. She missed stays, and was driven ashore. Her cargo of wool is now being got out. The passengers by the Star of the South were unable to land. The wind has now moderated, and heavy rain set in. The rivers are high, and floods are expected if the rain lasts , long. There have been heavy floods throughout the country surrounding Napier. Papakura and East and West Clive are under water. No such flood has been known since 1866. It is feared great damage will I be done. The water is still rising. February 11. The floods have not done much damage except to the crops. j The Land Commission is sitting, but J nothing important has transpired. I WangajSTUl, February 7.

The Native Minister addressed a meeting of settlers at Hawera last night to explain the intentions of the Government in regard to the the return of natives to the district. The meeting appeared quite satisfied. Black Eagle, Maori, Weed and Minnie have ari'ived t o take part in the races next week. A number of local horses are in training. Dr Curie is trying to start a newspaper at Marton by means of a company with a capital of £2OOO in 20s shares. February 8. The Wangaehu nomination took place to-day. The poll takes place next Saturday, It is believed that the Wanganui election is invalid in consequence of the Returning Officer having used both the Assembly and Provincial rolls without having the latter duly signed by Mr Crawford. February 10. At the Waitotara Kai Iwi nomination to-day, Jas. Alexander had the advantage of the show of hands. Pharazyn demanded a poll. At the Rangitikei nomination Messrs Milne, Graham, and Cash, were proposed and a poll was demanded. The Defence Minster and suite returned from Patea, and left for New Plymouth by the Luna this evening. Greymouth, February 10. A large fire occurred this morning in the block of buildings at the corner of Gresson and Arney streets. Eight cottages, one hotel, and Strike and Blackmore's extensive breAvery were entirely destroyed. Nothing was saved, and there were no insurances. Lytteltojst, February 10. The daily papers publish the following : —The following is an extract from a letter to a gentleman in Lyttelton from Captain Fox of the ship Forfarshire, now on her way to Wellington. The letter bears the date 19th November, 1872, and was written in the English Channel: —"We started from the Downs on the 17th, and here are stuck with head winds, and covered with passengers and emigrants, some of which are for Canterbury. We number 490 souls. Yesterday we had strong head wind with light sea. The ship was pitching when I saw one of the head boards go astern of the ship. We sent little chips at once to take the other in. While he, his mate, and old Ned the boatswain, were getting it in a sea came, and washed the other away, and poor old Ned overboard. We gave him a life buoy as he passed astern and lowered a boat and picked him up. He has broken the small bone of his right leg, but will soon be all right. You will understand that the two head boards had n " Forfarshire" in large letters upon them,

so if you will tell Mr Carder that the boards are lost overboard I shall be obliged. Christchurch, February 7. The circus opened last night, 1500 persons were present. The performance was a brilliant one, and is warmly spoken of by the local papers. Late trains are to be put on to allow country people to attend. Grain market is dull—farmers are still busy on their farms. Wheat buyers are not disposed to givs more than 4s. Sales of inferior and damaged samples are reported at 3s 6d to 3s 10s. Barley is enquired for at 6s. Good bright milling samples of oats have been quitted at 2s, but the price is likely to decline to Is lOd ; butter is in good demand at 5-kl to 6d; hams and bacon have advanced a penny and are quoted at 9d to 9^-d. The cricket match was resumed this morning, the last two Otago men going in. Moore in the first over took both the ■wickets without a run being obtained. At a meeting to-day it was agreed by 838 to 575 votes to sell to the Corporation at a premium of £5 per share.

At the Dunstan races Tambourine won the Hurdle Race, Tatton second. The Jockey Club Handicap was won by Atlas, Wildboy second. As much as ten to one was offered in the morning on Canterbury, but there were no takers. On the second day the Grand Stand Handicap was won by Hatred, Atlas second, Malice third. The Town Plate was a walk over for Tambourine. February 11. The theatrical and operatic cricket match realised £37 clear for the Benevolent Institution. The captain of the Iris reports that the Glenlora was to leave Mauritius on the Ist January. News has been received of the loss of the barque Cereal, in latitude 40 "30 S., on her way to Monte "Viedo, thence to Otago. She was owned by Capt. Sewell, of Oaraaru. February 13. Sailed—Nebraska. Driver, Stuart and Co., catalogued a thousand bales last week. There was an evident disposition to purchase at a reduction, and the sale was therefore adjourned till yesterday. Prices were in favor of buyers as compared with the early sales of the season. The highest price for cross-breds yesterday was Is llf-d. Peebles proceeds to Christchurch in the next steamer. O'Neill and Thomas of Wellington offer to lay down tramways in the city, and offer to give the Council ten per cent on the net profits after paying per cent themselves. AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY. Melbourne, February 1. Murray, who was a well known member of the firm of Greig and Murray, auctioneers, died on the 31st ult. of an apopletic fit. The Conference is expected to last for a week or ten days longer. Gold is reported to have been discovered at Viti Levu. The Rocket, a small steamer of ten tons, arrived at Noumea, from Sydney, after a stormy passage of twenty-six days. During a gale, one of the crew of three, was lost.
