PROPOSED ROMAN CATHOLIC CHAPEL IN AUCKLAND.
AT a Public Meeting, held at the Schoo House, on the evening of Thursday, th 29th July, Mr. Edward Murray in the chair, To take into consideration the best mode of obtaining subscriptions for the erection of an edifice for the worship of Almighty God by the Roman Catholics of Auckland, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted : Moved by Mr Donovan ; seconded by Mr Duff. 1. That in the rising town of Auckland, where many of its inhabitants who profess the Roman Catholic religion, and have no place consecrated at which they can congregate for the purpose of performing their religious duties, are earnestly desirous, with as little delay as possible, to have an edifice erected in which Divine worship may be performed according to the forms of their religion, and to the satisfaction of their consciences. Moved byMrO'Brien; seconded byMrM'Carthy, 2. That in order to accomplish an object so essential to the Roman Catholic community, a subscription list be immediately opened, and that the whole public of New Zealand be invited to aid in order to its early attainment. Moved by Mr Ward ; seconded by Mr Cowley, 3. That as soon as the necessary amount of subscriptions be obtained, application be made to his Excellency the Governor, for the aid of Her Majesty's Government in the building of a Roman Catholic Chapel at Auckland. Moved by Mr Redmond; seconded by Mr Scullin, 4. That the inhabitants of New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land be solicited to assist, by their subscriptions, in the erection of a place for public worship for the Roman Catholics at Auckland. Moved by MrM'Carthy; seconded by Mr O'Neill 5. That Mr Cooper, Colonial Treasurer, be respectfully requested to act as Treasurer, pro tern. and receive from the coUectors in Auckland, such sums as may be subscribed. Moved by Mr Lawson; seconded by Mr Cullan, 6. That a subscription list be opened this evening:, and also that a list be left at the houses of the committee to be elected from the gentlemen present, and that collectors be appointed for Auckland and other places, and that those for Auckland shall give a receipt for all monies received, and pay the same each day of collection snto the hands of Mr Cooper, Colonial Treasurer, thould that gentleman be kind enough to accept the office. Moved by Mr Nolan ; seconded by Mr Maloney 7. That the following thirteen gentlemen be appointed a committee,-with power to add to their number, for the purpose of carrying the foregoing resolutions into effect, and in any other manner to facilitate the building of a place of public worship for the Roman Catholics at Auckland, and that seven be a quorum, viz : Messrs Patrick Donovan, Edward Murray, Pnillip Callen, John O'Brien, Charles ONeill, John Oakes, Patrick Power, Henry Scullin, John Nolan, Richard Condon, John Maloney, Charles Emanuel Carr, and Thomas Lawson. Moved by Mr M'Quillan ; seconded by Mr Ryan 8. That any Roman Catholic clergymen who may hereafter be appointed, by the Lord Bishop Pompalier, to perform pastoral duties in this part of-the colony, be a member of the committee, in virtue of their office. Moved by Mr Wm, Walsh; seconded by Mr Power, 9. That the members of the committee meet on Thursday the sth of August, 1841, and on every Thursday after j and oftener, should necessity arise. , Moved by Mr Oakes ; seconded by Mr Donovan 10. That the following gentlemen be appointed collectors: —Messrs O'Brien, Condon, Lawson, and Duff, for Auckland. Lieut. Wa'sh and Mr YV. Walsh, for Coromandel Harbour. Dr. and Mr Rowland Davis, for Port Nicholson; Mr Patrick Fenton, for Kororarika. Mr Thomas Magner and Mr Dalton, for Sydney. The Rev. Mr Terry, for Van Diemen's Land. Moved by Mr. Callan ; seconded by Mr. Ward, 11. That the members of this committee shall wait on the benevolent of every persuasion, requesting their aid in the erection of our intended edifice of worship to Almighty God. Moved by Mr. Madden ; seconded by Mr. O'Neill 12. That the foregoing resolutions be advertised twice in the " New Zealand Herald and Auckland Gazette" Newspaper ; and also in the " Australasian Chronicle," published in Sydney, New South Wales. It was then unanimously resolved, on the'motion of Mr. Condon, seconded by Mr. Edward Hart, 13. That the four gentlemen who have been appointed collectors for Auckland, be deputed to wait upon his Excellency the Governor, previous to his departure for Port Nicholson, with a copy of the resolutions now adopted, and a list of the subscriptions; and also, most respectfully to solicit his Excellency's assistance, in any way which he may think proper, in furtherance of the intended object. Thanks were then voted to Mr. Murray, for his able conduct in the chair. The amount of subscriptions amount to nearly Two Hundred Pouuds, and a subscription list lies for signature at the house of Mr. P. Donovan, Shamrock, Rose and Thistle.
