FASHIONS AT TROTS
PROBLEM FOR RACE-GOERS WARM APPAREL CHOSEN Quite a problem in the matter of wearing apparel confronted women who attended the Auckland 1 rotting Clubs summer meeting on the opening day at Alexandra Park yesterday. Jn tlie early part of the morning it was lino and hot, but later it rained heavily. About midday the weather cleared and the sun shone again, hut the temperature had changed and there was a decided chill in the air. Most women who attended the meeting decided on tailor-made suits or frocks worn under light-weight coats as the most suitable wear. '1 lie suits were m a variety of colours, materials and styles and were usually worn with a blouse or woollen jumper in a contrasting colour. Frocks were of the patterned variety, mostly in the darker tonings, and were invariably worn with a coat of some light-weight tweed or Hannel. llats showed a variety of styles, the most popular being the beret. Fitting snugly to the head, and usually decorated with a diamante clasp or a feather, these are easy to wear and looked most attractive. Jt was not a day for the big summer hat, but therewas an infinite variety of boaters, highcrowned toppers and small hats composed of leathers, tulle, flowers or soft silky straw. While bats have decreased in size, handbags have shown the opposite tendency. Extremely capacious, they were to be seen yesterday in a wide range ol attractive colours and styles, and included some of those worn over the shoulder by a wide strap—a relic of the gas mask-carrying days of the war in Britain.
The wife of the president, Mrs Norman Wade, was present and wore a black ensemble with a black hat and silver fox furs. With her were Mrs W. •J. .lonian, wife of the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, Mrs G. ('. Glenn, wife of the president of the Wanganui .Jockey Club. .Mrs Gooseinan, Mrs Wallace and Mrs R. T.
