NOTES ON RACING
IN TIIE 31001) BREAKS VOLO SENWOD'S GOOD RUN BY ABAYDOS The Auckland Trotting Cup was a triumph for tho Canterbury-trained Sea Born. He was splendidly driven by J. Ilryce, who won the rate in I!M2 with Shadow Maid. Sea Born \vr.s always in a handy position, following Volo Senwod closely when the latter headed the pacemaker, Highland Scott, round the home turn. I'nder a hard drive, Sea Born wore down Volo Senwod to score by three-quarters of a length. Double IVtcr linidicd solidly lor third, just ahead of Medical Student. The field went away in good order, Black Label being first to show out. Highland Scott ran lo the lead alter three furlongs. Highland Scott led at the end of the Inst lialf-milo in 1.0 and mile in 'J.f<. ' •' was then steadied and as the hrst mile and a-lialf was completed in :l.'J I he was closely attended bv Medical Student, Volo Senwod and Sea liorn. The pace quickened at this stage and Double Peter made a sharp move. Highland Scott was headed at the home turn by Volo Senwod, who was almost immediately challenged by Sea Born, who came on 'lo win m 1 .'JT l-.">. Volo Senwod went l.'jfi and Double Peter did l.'Jl 1 -•>, the fastest ot the race The favourites, In the Mood and \\ar Kurili who were bracketed, were disappointing, although they were nicely placed entering the back straight. In Hie Mood broke and lost ground when going fast. She came again in the final stages to be handy to the placed horses at the finish. Emulous Wins Nicely The favourite Kmuloiis scored nicely from Highland Scott in the St. llcliers Handicap. Highland Scott did not go to Hie front as is his usual custom after making a good beginning, lie moved up quickly to join Kindlons soon after the latter had taken charge about two furlongs from home. Galvena refused to strike a gait at the start and lost Ins chance. Turco, always in the first three, battled on lo secure third from Black Label. Ribbon Again, making his firsl appearance in New Zealand, was checked early and had no chance afterward. The fast beginner Te Roto took charge early and was in front at Ihe end of six furlongs in I .:*!», at which stage Kmulous and Turco were very handy. Kinulous moved up quickly al the lop and when he reached the front was never in danger of defeat. Highland Scolt went a fine race, but had no chance <d' conceding his younger and improving rival 'J 1 yards. The three-year-old filly Local Gold was responsible for a fine Derby trial when she defeated a good field of older horses in the December Handicap, going 1.37 off Lis. She was in the middle of I lie field as Baby Grand led past the mile and a-lialf in :t.'J!l, but after improving her position at the top came home well In score decisively from Sir Victor, who ran one of his best races. Lone Haider reached the front approaching the straight the last time and was clear at the distance, only to break when Local Gold ran up to him. Mourne Spring, who was well back in tho early part, finished on well into fourth. Baby Grand, leader for over a mile and a-lialf, broke hearing the home turn. Balalaika, Popular Girl and Mine Host, always prominent in the running, tireil over tho last two furlongs.
Toushay Trots Wei" Beginning smartly and assisted by the mistakes of those in front of him, Toushay went into the lead before the end of the first mile of the Selby Handicap and, trolling solidly, fought on well when challenged by Cossack to win by a nock. If Cossack had not broken badly just after the start it is likely he would have won, as he trotted in great style over lbs last half-mile. Songbird, who broke early, also went well and finished a little better than Great Worth to secure third. Great Worth gave a solid display and may be improved by the race. Pardon Me, leader for the first round, broke badly and was never afterward dangerous. Noble Star ami Rosewna were always in the leading division, but faded at the end. There was a big surprise in the Grandstand Haiidicip when Cold Steel narrowly defeated the unlucky Larry Grattan. The latter showed fine speed in the middle singes lo reach the front, but as the leading division bunched approaching the straight he was crowded and broke. After losing ground, he made a great recovery and finished in rare style, to suffer a neck defeat by Cold Steel, who finished strongly afler being handy always. The little-fancied liita Grattan came home well for third, a head behind Larry Grattan. Hey Dey was a head away fourth and Diamond Trust was the same distance back fifth. Dyrham Lea Checked
Black Jewel and Sir Archie, were the early leaders, but were supplanted by Dyrharn Lea before a round was traversed. Highland Fling, with a sharp dash, reached the leaders at the top, where Axminster was handy, but well out. Dyrhain Lea appeared to he in trouble when the field bunched and dropped back, as did Highland Fling and Axminster. Aranui Jack threatened danger at the distance, but left his feet. Noble de Oro fell going into the back the last time. in a splendid finish Casabianca shaded Hidden Note in the Bridgens Memorial Handicap, with the back-marker Tall Timber half a lensth back third. Silver Plane, who tried to win all the way, weakened in the last furlong to be fourth. Casabianca was up early in a handy position. Hidden Note trotted one of her' best races, coming to the front at tho tin it after trailing Silver Plane practically all the way. She fought on gamely when'challenged, but was outstayed by Casabianca. The favourite Aerial Scott was away steadily, but broke badly inside a furlong and had to be pulled up before he would settle down. Although in a hopeless position, Aerial Scott revealed rare speed. He should make amends early. Mauiiinnas went a useful race and Danny Malone was in the picture most of tlie way without being really dangerous. Safari broke in the first round, 'osin;; any chance she had. Fine Turn of Speed Willi a fine turn of speed Great Belwin won the Akarauii Handicap from Air Marshall, who made a good effort to win all the way Great Belwin. after being slow to catch his hopples, soon ran into a handy position. He secured a fine run when Air Marshall moved out from the rails in the straight and dashed up to win like a good one. Air Marshall made a fine showing. Ann Sroit. always handy, ran on well for third and Contender did best, of the remainder. Maiolia lost a lot of ground at the start, but along the back the first time showed brilliant, speed to run round the field and join Air Marshall in the lead. The effort proved too much and Maiolia was done with two furlongs from home. If he had gone away correctly he might have added interest to tho finish. Brass Buttons ran his usual honest race, but could not go with the place-getters in the final furlong. The odds-oil favourite .Jack's Son was nicely handled by J. Pringlo in the Christmas Handicap. Two furlongs from home he ran into the lead and was followed round the turn by Charactcrjslic, who challenged. Under pressure Characteristic bored out, allowing Jack's Son to score by a length and a-lialf. Syncopate came on well to cut Josie Dell out of third. Kewpie's Bond took the lead from Lady Bligh at six furlongs to pass the mile in 'J.'JO and the mils and a-lialf in 3,'js, but he could not carry on after going another furlong and a-lialf. Josie Dell was handy throughout. J,ady Bligh, after having every chance, did not run on ui the finish. She may do better at a shorter distance.
GOOD TIIREE-YEAR-OLD THREE WINS IN SUCCESSION The promising three-year-old Royal Scot, who has been successful al his last three starts, is to make hid appearance in open company in the Plunket Handicap al Kllerslie today. Hoy a I Scot did not race last season and had his first outing in public when he ran unplaced iu the first division of the Trial Handicap at Te Arolia on October K. At his next appearance lie won the First Brunlwnod Hack Handicap at Te Hnpa on Novemh r 17. A week later he had another easy win in the Melrose Hack Handicap at Kllerslie, and on December S won Hie Frankton Hack Handicap at Te liapa by two lengths. On the last occasion he carried !Ul and outclassed his opponents over the last furlong. By Foxbridge from Highland Queen, Royal Scot is a half-brother lo Royal Master. He. is a candidate for the Great Northern Derby on New Year's Day and bis running in tho Plunket Handicap should give some indication as ( o his prospects in the classic. He is undoubtedly one of the most promising young horses seen out this season. The most pleasing feature of his successes lias been the .solid manner in which he has finished in his races.
