YACHT DELAYED
RACE TO TAURANGA MIXED AUCKLAND CREW One of the yachts competing in the ocean r:ii'c-> from Auckland to Tauranga on Saturday, the K ek.ss keeler Whakamii. had not arrived at Tauranga at a late hour last, night. She pulled into Port Charles, on the north-east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, 011 Monday afternoon to effect rudder repairs and remained there until yesterday morning, when she left for Tauranga, according to a report received from the police at Coromandel. The weather was unfavourable off Tauranga last night, and it was thought possible that the vessel may have been sheltering along the coast or at one of the islands overnight. The owner of the yacht is Mr J. Cook, who is skipper of the vessel, and among the members of the crew are his two sisters. Misses Patricia and Eileen Cook, and Mr Trevor Nugent, all of Auckland. In the official placiugs of the ocean race, the Whakanui was recorded as finishing fifth, but it was later learned that another vessel was mistaken for her.
UNFOUNDED ALARM AIR SEARCH FOR YACHT VESSEL SAFE AT PICTON ' (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Anxiety for the safety of the yacht Astral, bound from Redcliffs to PuHon. was aroused when a dinghy was washed up at South Bay, Kaikoura. At noon today the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Wigram received requests from both the police and the Nayy Department to send an aeroplane to Kaikoura to search for the yacht. A machine was despatched shortly afterward and returned later in the day after a fruitless search. However, advice was received in Christchurch late this afternoon that the Astral had arrived in Picton on Christinas Day, The yacht, which was manned by four residents of Redcliffs, left for Picton on December 21. It has been established that the dinghy washed up at Kaikoura had no connection with the Astral. OAMARU HARBOUR £IO,OOO GRANT FOR DREDGING (P-A.) OAMARU, Thursday A grant of £IO,OOO is to be made bv the Cabinet for dredging the Oamaru Harbour, following representations by the Oamaru Harbour Board. This was announced by the Minister of Health Mr Nordmeyer, who said that details of the work to be undertaken would have to be submitted to the Commissioner of \\ orks. LARGE RAINBOW TROUT <°- c > ROTORUA, Thursday A regular visitor from Auckland Mr 1 .11 , 1 a * ew seasons ago caught a 1-llb brown trout at Hamurana, and a plaster cast of the fish is in the possession of the Internal Affairs Department. Mr Ileid had another success yesterday morning when lie landed a rainbow trout weighing 111b at the mouth of the Xgongotalia Stream. This is the largest rainbow caught in the district, other than from Lake Tarawera, for many years.
