CAR CRASHES INTO CREEK OTHERS ESCAPE LIGHTLY (P.A.) XELSOX, Thursday A voung man was killed instantly when a three-seater car carrying four adults and two children and loaded with camping gear left the Matakitaki road at Carluke's Cutting, 17 miles from Murchison, late yesterday afternoon and crashed 72ft through the trees and scrub into a creek bed. The victim was

Francis Taylor, aged 18, of 26 Grafton Street, Linwood, Christchurch.

The other members of the party, which was travelling from Christchurch to Waiteriteri for a camping holiday, escaped with minor injuries. The driver was Mr Francis William .Jukes, of Albert Terrace, Christchurch, who had as passengers his wife, two children, Iris mother and Taylor. The accident occurred on a straight stretch of road where the bank dropped steeply to the creek. Taylor and Mrs Jukes, sen., were sitting in the dicky seat. The car apparently somersaulted several times, the passengers being thrown out near the bottom of the bank.

The people in a passing car gave assistance, but when a Murehison doctor arrived Taylor was dead. The others received medical attention, but none was taken to hospital.
