USEFUL SPRINTING WORK Owing to the absence of the majority of the candidates for the Whangarei Racing Club's Spring Meeting there was not much galloping at Ellerslie yesterday. Fast work was done on the No. 2 grass, with the poles out five feet, and the going was good. The two-year-olds Balancer And Mahia Park rail two furlong# down the back In '-'5 2-ss. Mahia Park is a chestnut colt by Vaals from Calient-o, by Polazel from Fortune's Wheel, a sister to Pliar Lap. Yes Tor ran three furlongs in 38s. Bonny March took 30s, and Dougal -10 l-ss. Dougal lightened up a lot after his race at Paeroa, but iias dono very well lately. Gay Ranee beat Diamond Doll over three furlongs in 37 3-06. Diamond Doll began the better ami led early, but ran very wide on the turn. Supervision ran an easy half-mile in 53 -l-ss. In similar work-outs Pahlwan took 6'2a and Lord Revel 51 3-r*s. Prince Revel ran four furlongs to 41) 12-os. easily the beet ol tiie morning over the distance. Noble Artist ami Heroic Star were to have galloped half a mile, but at the end of a furlong Heroic Star stumbled and lost her rider. Noble Artist completed the distance in 51 '2-5«. He looks much improved as a result of his race at Cambridge. < ihazipur was clear of Lysanders Jjßsi at the end of five furlongs in 1.5 2-5. Airlie equalled this time. Airlie is a five-vear-old gelding by Ringmaster from Lattice, by 1 ombal from Cowl. Cowl was the dam of many winners, including national. Mask and .1 he Monk. He has shaped promisingly in several schooling bouts over the small fences. Subadar ran five furlongs with laihuia lu I.C. Oowper went easily over five furlongs, running the last four in 535. Rill Fast, assisted over the last five by Felix btree.t completed six furlongs in 1.18 3-o. lhe> finished 0,1 Subline Pox was included among the horses who left for Whangarei yesterday. Yarrow and a four-year-old gelding by Lord Quex from Hastings West, sprinted half a mile in 50%5. lhey worked well and had a little in reserve at the end. Doges shaped well over three furlongs in 3Ss Twitch, who was under restraint at the finish, ran four furlongs in ots. Ritz, who iias been disappointing, ran a solid six furlongs, and carrying 0.0 registered 1.10. the last three in 30' as. „ , ~ . , The two-year-old filly Sakuntala, by Bulandshar from Roman Scandal, and Surprise, by Legatee from Mother-in-Law, sprinted three furlongs in 38s. They finished together homo and Sorrell ran an easy half-mile in 555. Smile and El Santo recorded similar time., Kol Ragi was responsible for a smart six furlongs in I.lsVis. the last three in 38s. Kol Ragi may be tried over nine furlongs on the second day of the Napier Park meeting. Gavjax, who is very fit, was given a strong six furlongs. On the inside grass, a three-year-old filly bv Sir Crusoe, and the two-year-old Broiefort filly, Gay Divorcee, sprinted three furlongs in 38V,s, both going well within themselves. Gav Divorcee, with a little more time, may develop into a useful sort, Saddler and. Citation ran the last four furlongs of their work in 555. r Silver Crest (N T . Lynch) and St. Nat (R. Saxton) were schooled. They went once round and. jumping six hurdles, recorded 1.14. L-or novices they fenced well, but lacked confidence.
DUALITY IMPROVED WAVERLEY CUP SUCCESS Duality is greatly improved. She won the Maslerton Handicap solidly, and on Monday she won the Waverley Cup. In the Waver e.v Cup, Duality was awkwardly placed on the rails as the field raced into the hack, and bv the time the far turn was reached she was second to last. She was still on the rails, with her rider apparently vniuly looking for a run. Duality's jockey moved out from the rails a little and his chance came as they turned for home. Here an opening was obtained and, putting I" a determined run, Duality noon ranged up beside Black Plato. After a short struggle she sralned the upper Imnd and went away over the last Ino yards to win decisively. Tn her nine starts last season Duality's only win was In a high-weight event at Maslerton, but so far this season she has gained two wins and two second placing* in six starts. Jmlcrinif by her wins at Masterton and Waverley, a race like the Waikato Cup may not. be beyond her capabilities. Haughty • • .48 PACING CONTEST IN THE MOOD TRIUMPHS In the Mood finished brilliantly to win the Hannon' Memorial Handicap at Oamaru on Monday, after losing ground at the start and being well back when the field had settled down. Special Edition was the early leader from Cabin Boy, with Dusky Sound, Loyal Friend. Battle Colours and Parshall all well placed. In the Mood improved her position with three furlonss to go to follow Dusky Sound, Cabin Boy and Loyal Friend into the straight, and in the best finish of the day she won well from Dusky Sound, with Cabin Boy, who appeared to be hampered over the last furlong, just in front of the fast-finishing Haughty. Haughty's splendid performance from the 30 yards mark was a feature of the race, and she should be nearly back to her best when the New Zealand Trotting Cup is decided next week. Bronze Ragle looked well, but did not make much impression on the field in the early stages. Integrity, one of the favourites for the Trotting Cup, broke at the start a nil was set a hopeless task. Countless and Indian Clipper also lost ground early.

SALE OF IJROWN DERBY (0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Mr J. R McKenzie has disposed of the three-year-old Brown Derby to a Wellington owner. The price is stated as 500 guineas.
