EMPIRE DAY FUNCTIONS CEREMONY AT UNIVERSITY Empire Day was celebrated by the Uoyal Empire Society with a reception held last night in the Common Room of the Auckland University College. The guests. who numbered nearly 120, were received by the president of the society, Professor F P. Worley > and Mrs Worle.v, and the chairman,? Mr H. H. Corbin, and Mrs Corbin. The ball was attractively decorated with flowers and ferns by members of the ladies' committee and two large Union Jacks were draped on one wall. An entertaining musical programme was provided by Mrs R. Reed, Mrs W. Hayes, Misses .June Taylor and Phyllis Gribbin and Mr Ray Opio. Professor Worley welcomed Archbishop and Mrs Averill, the Mayor, Mr J. A. G'. Allum, and Mrs Allum, and representatives of patriotic societies, the Overseas league, Navy League, Royal Society of St. George, the Navy and Merchant Navy. Archbishop Averill said that members met with joyful and thankful hearts for the Empire's great victory, especially when one remembered the millions of people who had been liberated. "Victory in Europe is the herald of victory over Japan in the East," slated the archbishop. In his address, the Mayor mentioned the debt the country owed to returning servicemen. Brigadier Clifton also spoke. OVERSEAS LEAGUE RECEPTION Gaily decorated with Hags and bunting, the Overseas League rooms were crowded to the doors last night when Empire Day was celebrated in the usual traditional style. The president, Mr T. J. Fleming, presided, and the hostesses for the evening were Mrs Fleming, Mrs H. Schmidt, convener ol the house committee, and Miss Amy Sutton, assisted by members of the executive and house committees. The guests of honour included the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs J. A. C. Allum, Lieutenant-Colonel and Mrs J. D. Swan, representing the Army, Commander and Mrs E. W. Garner lor the Navy, Flying-Ofticer A. J. Quill for the Air Force, and Lieu-tenant-Colonel L! Han ley for the United States Army. The Allies were represented by Mr and Mrs Andrew Chong for China, Mr and Mrs Pospisil for Czechoslovakia, and M. Micard lor France. Representatives were also present front the Royal Empire Society, the Navy League, Victoria League, St. Andrew's Society, Royal Society of St. George, Ulster Society. Malayan Group, Cumberland and Westmoreland Societv and the Welsh Society. A delightful musical programme, arranged by the convener. Mrs V. Bosworth, was contributed by a string quartet, Ina Bosworth, Moya CooperSmith, Lettj' Walls and Lalla Hemus. and by Mr Teddy 'Hill, vocalist. The guest speaker for the evening was Brigadier Clifton, whose talk was based on the theme that the toleration and understanding learned in a prison camp could he applied- with advantage to world affairs at the present time.
SERVICEMEN ENTEI!TAINED The vice-presidents and general council of the Auckland branch of the Victoria League celebrated Empire Day yesterday afternoon by entertaining sick and wounded servicemen, including some naval visitors. The guests were received by the chairman, Mrs L. S. Rickerby, assisted by members of the executive committee. The Mayor, Mr •J. A. C. Allum, briefly addressed the gathering, which included representatives of the Army and o*f various patriotic societies. The musical programme was in the charge of Miss Ela Hutchison. Autographed portraits of the King and Queen, which had been presented by Mrs J, B. Macfarlane, were on view. HOSPITAL AUXILIARY The monthly council meeting of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary was held at the Nurses' Home, Mrs A. D. Camphell presiding. The Mental Hospital committee informed the meeting of the gift of another radio, making a total of three, to the wards of the hospital. Five hundred books had also been collected for the library. The Wilson Home committee is at present having a drive to obtain squares of knitting to be made up into quilts for the children's cots. TAKAPIINA R.S.A. Voting overseas and New Zealand wives of men of the Torces were entertained by the Takapuna branch of the women's section of the R.S.A. in the local R.S.A. Hall. The president, Mrs M. Gibbons, received the guests and during the afternoon Mr H. T. Morton, M.P.. gave an address on R.S.A. work and the help given by the various branches of the women's section of the association in the care of returned soldiers. MARRIED IN LONDON News has been received of the marriage on April 13 at All Saints' Church, Putney, London, of Lieutenant Bryan Lawrence, R.A., a former pupil of King's School, Remuera, his bride being Miss Esther Tomkins. Lieutenant Lawrence is the only son of Mr H. A. Lawrence, advertising manager of the New Zealand Associated Press in London. He •has been serving with a light antiaircraft battery on the Western Front. ENGAGEMENTS Hillstead —Wiggins.—The engagement is announced between Signalman Gordon Vietor Hillstead, K.X.Z.X.. eldest son of Xlrs Hillstead and tlie late Mr V. C. Hillstead, Invercargill and Marjorie Elizabeth, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Wiggins, of St. Heliers Ray, Auckland. Potter—Mclnness,—The engagement is announced between Noel Travers, youngest son of Mr and the late Mrs E. H. Potter, S4 Valley Road, Mount Eden, and Isobel (Belle) Flora, serorid daughter of Mr and Mrs E. M. Mrlnness, o>s Church Street, Devonport. Robinson—Bagnall.—Mr and Mrs C. J. Bagnall, of Otanuhu, announce the engagement of their younger daughter, Jessie Winifred, to Rex Gordon, third son of Mr and Mrs T. V. Robinson, of Mount Albert. Thomas—Wire.—The engagement is announced between Corporal Victor Douglas Thomas (recently returned from overseas), youngest son of Mrs E. V.
