AUCKLAND EXCHANGE FIRM VALUES RULING Firm values ruled on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, when a wide range of shares recorded gains 011 sale. Sellers later showed greater reluctance to operate and the market closed with supplies absorbed in many instances. Bank shares were particularly active and contributed largely in the total turnover of 3984 shares for the day. AUSTRALIAN COMPANIES A.C.I. DIVIDEND RAISED Australian Consolidated Industries, Ltd., lias announced a final dividend 0f..3% per cent, payable on June 27. This rakes the rate for the past year to 7 per cent, against f>y, per cent which was maintained for the two previous years. Standard-Way stood, Ltd., earned £2l for the year ended March 31, against .C 17.238. Dividend is held at 10 per cent. The electrical engineering business <jf Edmunds Noir and Co. Ply. of Newcastle has been purchased for "ash. The directors express fears regarding the effects of fewer war contracts. * COAL MINE COSTS MINERS' RISING WAGES (0.C.) DUNEDIN, Thursday "At no time in the history of the company have conditions been more difficult than during the past 12 months," said Mr J. \ Sparrow, chairman of directors of the. Kaitangata Coal Company, Limited, at the annual meeting. Higher operating costs and a substantial drop in output were reported by the chairman who said the February floods had caused a reduction of 5000 tons in the coal mined. In spite of the drop in output, Mr Sparrow said, mine and railway wages were up by £OOO, the average mining wages cost being 17s 2d a ton, or Is -Id higher than for the preceding year.
