INTRUDERS IN STORE

EARLY MORNING EPISODE ARREST OF TWO MEN The prompt actions of three brothers led to the arrest of two men who were found in the office of the Invincible Cash Stbres at Glen Eden early yesterday morning. Messrs L. and F. Martin, who operate a 24-hour taxi service, were asleep in their garage opposite the store when at about 2.45 a.m. they were awakened by the sound of splintering wood. When they -went outside the garage they noticed lights in the store and a motor-car parked outside. They disconnected the distributor wires so that the car could not be started and then went to the home of their brother, Mr C. H. Martin. The New Lvnn police station was telephoned and, pending the arrival of Constable O'Sullivan, the three Martin brothers waited outside the store. The constable found that a door had been forced, and with the three men he went into the store. In the office where the safe is situated he found two men crouched behind a counter. There was a charge of gelignite in the keyhole of the safe and on the floor in front of the safe was a detonator and a length of fuse. The two men arrested were taken to the taxi office and held there until a police car arrived from Auckland. Robert John Ryan, aged 32, mechanic, and Richard Arthur de Thierrv, aged 31. labourer, appeared before "Mr J. Morling, S.M., yesterday, charged with breaking and entering the shop "of Invincible Cash Stores at Glen Eden on April 16 with intent to commit a crime. On the application of Detec-tive-Sergeant Aplin the accused were remanded until Monday. Bail was not allowed. ■ ' WORK STOPPED WATERFRONT DISPUTE MEN CLAIM EXTRA PAY A dispute over the extra rate for handling lime resulted in work stopping at two holds on the Union Steam Ship Company's vessel Waipiata at two o'clock yesterday afternoon. The normal extra rate for "lime cargoes is _ 5d an hour. The waterside workers claimed Is an hour for the work and said that they had sent a claim for that rate to the Waterfront Control Commission some time ago. No further work was done at the two holds yesterday. No agreement on- the matter "was reached at a of the local disputes committee yesterday afternoan and it was referred to the Auckland waterfront controller, Mr W.-J. Cuthbert. Mr Cuthbert declined to comment yesterday.
