HOLIDAY BREAD

FULL SUPPLY ASSURED DECISION OF EMPLOYEES Full supplies of bread will be assured over the Christmas holiday period as a result of the decision of a mass meeting of members of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Baking Trades Employees' Onion held yesterday afternoon. Fears that the dispute between the master bakers and the employees on working hours and payment would cause an interruption in baking and result in a short supply of bread over the week-end, had been very real in trade circles over the last few days. The union meeting was held to discuss the outcome of a conference held in Wellington on Tuesday between the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, and representatives of both parties. The Auckland employees adopted a resolution on December 9 agreeing not to work more than eight hours a day, or more than 'lO hours in a working week, Baking arrangements to ensure bread supplies over the Christmas holidays required the employees to work more than eight hours on Saturday morning. A report on the conference and the recommendation of the national executive of the union that the men carry on work so that the public would not go without bread over the holiday break were submitted by the secretary, Mr F. H. Bourke. After a lengthy discussion, the meeting adopted the executive's recommendation.
