MELBOURNE CUP

VICTOEY FOE SIEIUS : SAN MARTIN BREAKS A LEG MELBOURNE. Nov. 12 Sirius, a warm favourite, was the winner of the Melbourne Cup on the second day of the Victoria Racing Club's Spring Meeting at Flemington yesterday. He took charge three furlongs from home and stalled off a strong challenge by Peter to win by half a length. Cellini was a good third. A protest was lodged on behalf of Claudette against -Cellini on the ground of interference in the straight, but it was dismissed. San Martin, winner of the Victorian Derby, broke a leg turning out of the straight and was destroyed. Sirius held a good position always, following tho pacemakers, Clayton and Judith Louise, with the remainder of the field well back. Five furlongs from home the field closed up, and Miuiro, on Sirius, went past Judith Louise, and his mount was going so well that he was forced to head off Clayton. This left Sirius in front, and all was well till the furlong post, when l'cter came with a great run, but he could not beat Sirius. Peter was unfortunate in being bunched in the field and did not emerge until well down the straight. He showed rare courage at the finish and fully extended Sirius. Cellini Itad one of the good runs of the rare, more or less trailing Sirius throughout, which aided him a good deal in running third. Claudette was fourth.
