RACING NEWS

AVONDALE MEETING SUCCESS OF TE HINEMOA Well-backed horses were successful in most of the races at the Avondale Jockey Club's Second Spring Meeting at Eilefslie on Saturday, but there were a few good dividends, Regal March, Te Hinemoa, Gold Cape and Verdant all paying double figures to win. Actually Regal March paid over £4O to win and over £'l2 for a place. Even so, her place return was not as good as that of Royal Master, who finished third in the Members' Handicap. The top-weight Te Hinemoa gave a good performance to win the King George Handicap. She was always prominent, lying fourth early behind Water Vixen, Skydonna and Billy Peach, and being second into the straight in dose pursuit of Billy Peach, who took command just before the home turn, where Water Vixen retired quickly. Commencing the last furlong Billy Peach and Te Hinemoa were just in front and To Hinemoa stalled off a late challenge from Expanse to win by a, head. The three-year-old Artificer also held on gamely for third and Billy Peach was a very close fourth, just weakening at the end after beginning his effort a little early. Keen Play, well in the picture half-way down the straight, was fifth followed by Jeff. Foxsen, Poxlaw, Abbey Fox and Marble Fox. Expanse finished most impressively and would have won in another few strides. He was scratchy in his preliminary and pulled up very tender. If he recovers, he is likely to see a short price in the Waikato Cup next Saturday. After reaching the lead Quickly, the three-year-old Verdant was never headed in the Electric Handicap and he won narrowly after a hard finish with Kentish, who was third in the early running. Kentish gave one of his best performances and just failed by a nose. Cowper finished fast from a fair way back and was only a head away third. With a better run, he might have won. Bonny Pay, after being well up always arid running wide at the turn, was fourth ahead of Landveyor, finishing on. Royal Merit, Powys and Peter Gregor. Verdant has an abundance of speed, hut he is very highly strung. On this occasion he behaved well and he gave the apprentice It. Gibhs bis first winning ride. Plas--1 sida was never prominent and Tutere lost ground after being well up to the turn. Powys was second for the first half-mile and then retired. The conditions for racing were perfect, the weather being gloriously fine and the track in excellent order. The totalisator bandied C1.V1.104 10s, compared with £147,551 10s last year, an increase of £6013. The jockey H. X. Wiggins was fined £2 for taking up a wrong position on Black ■Ace in the Avondale Stakes. Black .Ace drew Xo. 18 at the barrier. Tn spite of that he was a hot favourite. Black Ace was never prominent, finishing about the middle of the field.
