TEXTILE WORKERS FIRST AWARD SOUGHT The first industrial award for northern district textile, sack and bag workers was sought in the Arbitration Court yesterday. Air. W. Miller represented the union and Mr. W. E. Anderson the employers. Mr. Miller reported that in Conciliation Council the parties had failed to | agree upon hours of work, overtime. I wages and holidays. The employers based their proposals j on' the Court's usual conditions for un- | skilled factory workers, said Mr. An- ; derson. j The Court reserved its decision. | FIRE BOARD FINANCE I A decision to vote £IOOO to the capi- | tai expenditure fund was made by the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board yesterday. The need for building up the capital fund was urged by the superintendent, Mr. W. L. Wilson, who stated that much equipment' which could not be obtained at present would be required after the war. He mentioned tire alarm extensions and a ladder. By building up the canital expenditure fund, the board would nave money available, and lie considered tins preferable to making increased levies on the contributing bodies in one years estimates. PARCELS FOR TROOPS. With the New Zealanders in the Middle Fast constantly on the move, the National Patriotic Fund Board commissioner. Lieutenant-Colonel F. Waitc, has no easy task in keeping track of them all. but the many messages received from the men bear eloquent testimony to the success of his efforts and to the appreciation of the men for the parcels. Without exception the soldiers warmly praise the contents. The only note of criticism comes from a few men who have found that some unsealed chocolate has been included. The messages pay tribute to the system which enables New Zealanders far away from home to recent parcels representing contributions by. tho people of the Dominion, and there is praise also for those all over the country who have packed the purees.
