HOUSING PLANS

BIRKENHEAD DISTRICT TWELVE STATE DWELLINGS (S.R.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday It had been decided to build 12 State houses at Birkenhead said the Minister of Works, the Hon. R. Semp's replying in the House of Representatives to-day to a question raised previously by Mr. H. f. Morton (Opposition —Waitemata), on the district's prospects. Plans were forwarded to Auckland recently in order that negotiations could be opened for a satisfactory contract, said Mr. Semple. TJnfprtunately, however, information had now been received that sufficient manpower would not bo available to permit of the contract being commenced before the end of April. EX-SERVIOEMEN'S FAMILIES UNUSED CAMPS NOT AVAILABLE (S.R.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday It was not possible in view of the necessity for holding accommodation in reserve for the Government to agree with the suggestion of Mr. H. T. Morton (Opposition—Waitemata) that unused military camps should be made available for housing ex-servicemen and their wives, stated a reply by the Minister of Works, the Hon. R. Semple, which was circulated in the House of Representatives to-day. The Government had to be guided by the chiefs of staffs in regard to accommodation for armed forces.

LABOUR CONGRESS

EMPLOYERS' DELEGATE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday It is announced that Mr. H. F. Butland, of Christchurch, will attend th« International Labour Office conference in Philadelphia next month as representative of employers. It is likely that the New Zealand Minister to Washington, the Hon. W. Nash, will also be present at the conference as a Government representative, in addition to another Government representative yet to be selected. Mr. Butland is secretary of the Canterbury Employers' Association, a position he has occupied since 1940. In this capacity he has also acted as secretary and treasurer of 27 industrial associations or unions of employers, and 10 trade associations. Before joining the Canterbury Employers' Association he served with the Court of Arbitration for 17 years, for the last three as registrar. Mr" Butland is 41 years of age.

OBITUARY MR. H. TAYLOR The death has occurred in Sydney of Mr. H. Taylor, governing director of the Advanx Tyre and Rubber Company. Mr. Taylor was born in Canada and wai an engineer by profession. He joined his brother in business 24 years ago, and they established branches through-: out Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
