AUCKLAND EXCHANGE, MARKET IRREGULAR The easier trend in some of the market leaders was confirmed on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday when New Zealand Insurance, National Insurance and Broken Hill Proprietary were all transferred at lower levels. This easing did not extend to the market generally, and a good amount of business was done at firm values. Government stocks were f.'iirly active at late rates. In the banking section buyers for Nationals of New Zealand raised their offers to 50s 3d, bringing in a seller at a shilling higher.,

BUSINESS TREND HIGH LEVELS RECORDED Statistics indicative of economic activity in January suggest a high level of spending, says the monthly Abstract of Statistics. The value of cheque transactions was higher than in any previous January; totalisator turnover in January per racing day was twice as high as in the previous January, and passensrer journeys on the railways were more than for any other January period on record. A substantial increase in bank deposits, a reduction in bank advances, and an increase in unexercised overdraft authorities in January suggest that wholesale and retail merchandise stocks have been reduced following the pre-Chriiitmas shopping period. External trading activity. during January was characterised by an exceptionally high level of imports, and a very substantial excess of imports over exports for the month. In fact, the figures in both instances are the highest recorded in any month since 1920DISMANTLING IN PROGRESS OIL BORING MACHINERY (0.C.) v NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday The dismantling of the New Zealand Petroleum Company's oil derrick at the Devon No. 1 bore. New Plymouth, is in progress. A start was made on Monday and by this afternoon the bottom sets of angle ste<3l were all that was left standing on the base of the derrick. Before dismantling was be§un as much of the casing as it was possible to recover was withdrawn and the bore was thoroughly sealed. It will take two of three weeks to complete the dismantling of the engines and machinery. The plant was first erected and operated at Midhurst, where a bore 10,970fii deep was drilled. After removal of the plant to New Plymouth drilling went on from April, 1941. to January, 1943. Since then operations have consisted of testing and retesting at various depths to ensure the results were conclusive before abandoning the bore. PIG~ PRODUCTION WINTER PREMIUM PROPOSED (0.C.) PUKEKOHE, Thursday In order to meet the marked reduction in the number of pigs being produced, and to offer some encouragement to farmers, the Auckland District Pig Council at its meeting to-day decided to recommend to the national council that the Government shoald pay a premium for pigs produced in i:he winter months, such premium to be met out of 0"* £55,000 at present held by the Government on the pig producers' account. The council also decided to support a romit from the Taranaki council stating that, in order to maintain or increase pig production, an increase of price to at least 7d per lb was necessary. The Government stabilisation of pig and pig meat prices was discussed and, on the motion of the chairman, Mr. R. C. Clark, it was decided to express to the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, the council's satisfaction that any plans he had for the abolition of saleyard buying had been abandoned
