Home Guard Parades Cancelled! All parades arranged for Sunday for city and suburban Home Guard batr talions have been cancelled as a re- . suit of instructions from Wellington. Tlie reason is the unveiling of the memorial to the late Mr. M. J. Savage. Watch In Letter Box When a street letter box in the Wangantii city area was cleared of mail recently, a postal official found a watch, which was still ticking and in good condition. It was without wrapper or address label. It is presumed that the watch was placed in the box by some absent-minded person. Parade of W.A.A.O.'s A parade consisting entirely of mem?' bers of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps of the Northern Military District will be held to-day, commencing at noon. Headed by a band from a military camp, the W.A.A.C.'s will leave the junction of Park and Grafton Roads and from there will march through Queen Street. Ancillary Truck Licences The hearing of applications in connection with the granting of transport goods licences to ancillary users was continued by the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, Mr. E. J. Phelan, yesterday, when 50 cases were considered. Several applications were granted, while decision was reserved in the remainder. Canvas Boots A correspondent writing to the Hf,rald suggests that, as gumboots are unprocurable, an effort should be made to provide suitable boots at a reasonable price for use by farm workers. At present the only substitutes for gumboots available are waterproof canvas ankle boots of the type used by soldiers in the Pacific war theatres. Petrol for Soldiers "If this is how they are treated, before they go away, what are they to expect when they return," said ft speaker at last night's meeting of the Auckland Returned Servicemen's Association executive and club delegates, when referring to the cancellation of petrol allowances for soldiers on final leave. It was again decided to bring the matter before the Government and members of Parliament for the Auckland district. Offer ol Mallard Duck An offer to restock Te Koutu Lake, in the Cambridge Domain, with purebred mallard duck, on condition that the crossbred duck at present there were first removed, was received frora a member at the annual meeting of the Cambridge sub-branch of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. It was pointed out by members that, as the mallard had a tendency to mate with inferior breeds, it would be unwise to introduce the valuable duck until the domestic variety were eliminated from the lake. Memorial to Maori Soldiers The establishment of a chair of studies in Maori learning , and culture at Canterbury University College,, as a memorial to Maori soldiers who died in the last war and in the present war, was suggestfd at a meeting ex( £ cutive committee of the, Christcnurcn Returned Services Association, t" 6 establishment of such a chair,- it was stated, would be a fitting memorial to the gallantry of men of a fine F a . ce ' The committee decided to ask p°rni'no headquarters of the New turned Services Association to investigate the proposal.
