ALLEGED GOLD THEFT
HEARING ADJOURNED CASE AGAINST METALLURGIST (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday The hearing of the charge against Leo Edward Morland, metallurgist, which occupied the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and yesterday, has been adjourned until next Thursday. Accused is charged with the theft of 3650 ounces of alluvial gold of a total value of £31,496, the property of the Arahura Gold Dredging Company, Limited. He is alleged to have stolen the gold at Arahura on or about October 29, 1940, when he was employed by the company. The case was adjourned by Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., until April 8 immediately after the hearing was resumed this afternoon. Counsel for,the defence, Mr. J. A. Scott, of Wellington, consented to the remand, which was made on the application of Mr. A. T r Donnelly, for the Crown. Two witnesses who were to have given evidence to-day were a corporal of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a United States customs agent.
