PALMERSTON NORTH, Thursday Conditions were good for the final trials at Awapnni this morning, when outstanding gallops were those of Screen, Pay Roll, Caroline Bay, Theolateral. Whackie. Waipero. Sir Bradbury, Gladynev and Stairway. Native Chief gave a brilliant display over four hurdles. On the course proper, with the flags 30ft out. Screen ran five furlongs in 1.2, the last three in 37 4-ss. Caroline Bay was just in front of Pay Roll in 1.3 3-5. Theolateral just shaded Lady .Spiral in 1.5. Whackie and Waipero sprinted five furlongs, finishing with something in reserve, in 1.5 3-5. Gay Genet ran 1.0 1-5. and Colerica beat Camp Maid in 1.0. Sir Bradbury sprinted the last five of six furlongs in 1.5 1-5. Shairwa.v and Gladynev, after running the first two furlongs in 26 4-ss. completed seven in 1.31 4-5. The race he had at Trentham appears to have sharpened Gladynev. Sea Quex and War Credit sprinted five furlongs in 1.5 1-5. On the plough Kanui te Pai and Alethea were'slightly ahead of Alchemy at the end of seven furlongs in 1.32 4-5. All worked attractively. Subadar. who looks in great heart, Meermint and Bright Fox were allotted strong pace work. DIFFICULTY OF TRAVEL REASON FOR RETIREMENT The well-known New Zealand sportsman. Mr. G. J. Barton, who for many years has raced horses extensively in .Melbourne, lias decided to retire from Australian racing states Cardigan of the Melbourne Herald. Mr. Barton also raced horses in partnership with Mr. W. H. Balloch, and the combination met with a good deal of success. The horses Cloudy Bay, Owaka, All Veil, Pickway, Watapai and Morveil are to be offered for sale. The reasons for Mr. Barton's retirement from the sport in .Australia are the difficulty of travel from the Dominion in wartime, and also the limitation of racing and the opportunities for the horses he owns to race. Mr. Barton will continue to race a few horses in New Zealand, where he purchased some yearlings at the last national yearling sales. ELLERSLIE TRAINING There was not much fast work at Ellerslie yesterday, but a few horses with engagements at Paeroa to-morrow were sprinted. The No. I grass provided hard going. Katie Scarlett and Royal Duchess were responsible for a smart four furlongs in 49 3-ss. Over the same journey Sund recorded 50 1 -ss; Verulam, 51 l-ss; Elect. 52 2-SS; Kronos, 52 3-ss. Miss Cambria ran three furlongs nicely in 3Ss. Yes Tor was shading Beaucoup at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. the last four in 50s. Victory Lass and First Gold Monev were in front of Glyn Dur at the end of a mile in 1.45 3-5. Volifox was not doing her best to record 1.-17 3-5. On the tan Transcend spr.inted naif a mile in 51s. Rara Avis, going comfortably at the end, also ran 51s. Golden Valley took 52s for the same distance. CHEAP BROOD MARE When Mr. E. A. Taylor, of the Sunnyside Stud, Cudal, bought the mare Frangipani for 1(1 guineas at the dispersal sale of the Angle Stud, Dubbo, early in 1940, he secured a bargain. The mare had had one foal, which, registered as Amazed, developed to win the Victoria Racing Club St. Leger last Saturday. Bred in 1934, the imported Frangipani is by Spearhead, sire of Spearfelt, from Won Bv Waiting, an imported mare, by Charles O'Malley, one of the best staying sons of the St. Simon sire Desmond, from Allash. PICNIC RACING CLUB Plans to form a picnic racing club were discussed at a meeting held recently at Waihou, Te Arolia. It was decided, subject to the permission of the Auckland District Committee, to hold a race meeting next month at Waihou.
