TOKIO RAID HERO LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2» The famous aviator Brigadier-General Jimmy Doolittle. who led United States bombers over Tokio, was refused a tube of toothpaste because he had no empty tube to give in exchange and was bluntly asked if he knew there was a war goinpi on, a Memphis druggist disclosed I he other day. The druggist, Malin M. Ellis, said he did not at first recognise his distinguished customer when Doolittle visited .Memphis. After being refused the toothpast*' he then asked for an item that has been difficult to obtain because of war interference with imports. Ho was told it was not in stock. The next item requested was a bottle of hair tonic and Doolittle protested mildly over the seemingly excessive tax on the bottle. Ellis fixed a stern eye upon him nnd asked: "You've heard about the war, haven't you?" "I just didn't know," was the reply. "You see. I've been away. Doolittle is my name." After that lie got the toothpaste.
