PATRIOTIC BARREL FUND

North Shore residents who use the Devonport ferry have had the opportunity of contributing a weekly quota of small change to the patriotic funds of the district by means of a barrel collector. Every Monday morning travellers are reminded of their obligation and privilege by means of a loudspeaker, the idea being that every person should contribute threepence a week. However, the contributions on other days of the week also maintain a high level, the average weekly collection being £37. It is proposed shortly to transfer the loud-speaker to Stanley Bay, where a smaller barrel was installed some weeks ago. The total from both sources to date is almost £7OO.
